iGone Auction, Ukay Ukay and More for Ondoy Victims

Catching up with Christine over dinner and what she has been up to….

Though she has a day job, she told me she likes to do more social work!  and instantly I love the girl even more and felt so happy and fulfilled for our friend, Gil, to have married someone like Christine.  Sometimes we are so caught up in our careers,  in our own lives, and here is someone who thinks of others first before all that!

Anyway, she told me about what she did last year during the Ondoy tragedy.  Because I can’t keep up with all my facebook friends, I failed to see what she did and I thought it was an interesting idea.  So I am featuring it here now still.  It’s never too late to BE INSPIRED!  What creative ways on how people can help others.  Again, Christine teaches me the value of working hard to help others- sometimes we are so busy we just give money or we just make it easy for ourselves and just clean up our things and just give it away.  Christine and her friends did something else….. And here is how they did it!

Step 1 AUCTION in Facebook and “Ukay Ukay”

Christine and her officemates, who are also her bestfriends, collected all their valuable things which they thought they could auction.  That way they can raise more money since some of the items are collectibles.  Everyone gave up many things from their personal collections or closets and posted it in facebook in their IGone page

They set up photo albums of the items that were to be auctioned.  Read carefully how they described each album :-)

“These are bags that were previously love and lovingly chosen…but whose owners felt they would be put to better use to generate funds for families victimized by Ondoy”

 igonephotoalbums2.jpgphotoalbumsigone.jpgigonebags.jpg

Had I known about this, I would have  bought something for my Dad here, he loves these things!!!

Many beautiful and branded items which they gave up and sold

While the auction was going on, they had the “Ukay Ukay” Sale in their office for 3 weeks.  The logic behind this was that instead of giving these clothes away and not knowing if they will fit that person or if will be appreciated, they sold it to people who will actually pay for it and will personally use them - hence everyone benefits accordingly.  I suddenly felt bad giving away all my clothes and other personal stuff, putting them in boxes and just giving them away. Then now wondering whether they even liked it or got to use it.  So I thought this was a good idea!

They are so good at marketing!! Signs around the “Ukay Ukay” sale :-)

Their company matched whatever money they raised!! How generous! 1-sign-200.jpg

STEP 2  Packing of relief goods

The Auction and Ukay Ukay was just the beginning.  After 3 weeks, they raised a lot of money!!! And they bought goods and repacked them.  They turned their office into a packing center:-)  Thanks to supportive bosses who allowed all this to happen!

Wow!! 1,623 relief bags!!  You can more or less compute how much they raised!!! GREAT JOB GUYS!!!

Step 3 Distributing the Relief Goods

Still it is not yet over, they all went themselves and distributed the goods

Togo Shrine Antique Flea Market

The main reason we were in the Harajuku area was because we wanted to see the flea market by the Togo Shrine

Things are not cheap in the market…like this helmet which I spotted and knew my Dad would like…It was going for around 60,000 yen! The black one was 47,000 yen!

Garage Sale by Tessa

tessasgaragesalebook1.jpg

Heart2Heart was at Tessa’s house at 7:30 am and there were already quite a number of people going through the many things that Tessa had for sale.  This is one of the most organized Garage sales I have ever been to.

1.)  All the items were properly sorted by category

2.)  Most of the items had price tags

3.)  They had receipts to give to the customers

4.)  There were guards by the gate to check all the people going out and checking the items with the receipt

5.)  There were people in charge of the different responsibilities - pricing, cashiering, guarding, etc etc.

Thank you to Tessa for generously sharing her blessings.  She has a lot of blessings, a lot things for herself but she generously gives them away too….. for charity.  Popsie was telling her to send down more toys since the toy department was running out and the next thing you knew, she sent down more toys :-)

tessasgaragesalebook17.jpg

As soon as Tessa came down to greet everyone and check on the sale, the ambience of the whole event changed.  She just has this personality that is so alive and fun.  Then she brought down her Ipod and put some music!  That was so cool!  A garage sale with music!  :-) She is just as colorful as the many things that she had in the garage sale.

Being the Sea Princess, she had some fish decorations hanging in her tents…tessasgaragesalebook2.jpgtessasgaragesalebook13.jpg

Some friends of Heart2Heart came over and cousins of Tessa stopped by before their saturday biking routine…

Tessa’s husband, Dennistessasgaragesalebook27.jpg

Popsie seemed to be the head honcho of everything.  I found her so amusing as she would talk to the customers and try to explain not to bargain so much as the proceeds would go to the “mga batang may bulate.”  She is so funny!  Then she was the one responsible for placing the price tags on the items the day before

All proceeds go to the National Orthopedic Hospital - psychiatric ward for kids.  They will buy nebulizers, medicines and pediatric wheelchairs.  Also, the proceeds to go to around one thousand children in Roxas City, Capiz for deworming.

tessasgaragesalebook15-1.jpg

Marlon was the one in charge of pricing the items especially the clothes, gowns, shoes and accessories of Tessa

tessasgaragesalebook16.jpg

I was surprised to see my bootcamp classmate Girlie.  She is part of batch ‘81 and was in charge of the first shift.  She was the cashier listing down all the items in the receipt and accepting payments.  It was a tough job as the lines were long very early in the morning.

tessasgaragesalebook14.jpgtessasgaragesalebook19.jpg

Tessa had any many things to choose from, not only her fashion items that she is known for. There were home items, picture frames ( with her photos in them ), children’s clothes, DVDs, some electronic items, sofas, chairs, and toys.

 tessasgaragesalebook3.jpgtessasgaragesalebook4.jpgtessasgaragesalebook5.jpgtessasgaragesalebook6.jpgtessasgaragesalebook7.jpgtessasgaragesalebook8.jpgtessasgaragesalebook9.jpgtessasgaragesalebook10.jpgtessasgaragesalebook11.jpgtessasgaragesalebook18.jpgtessasgaragesalebook12.jpgtessasgaragesalebook21.jpgtessasgaragesalebook20.jpg

Some of the customers of course wanted to have a picture with the celebrity

tessasgaragesalebook26.jpg

Time to shop again and then next year maybe you will have PART2!  Thanks Tessa for your generosity.  I am sure you were attached to many of your things that had sentimental value to you, but yet you willingly shared them with others who will benefit from them.  You will surely be helping a lot of children.  Thanks also to Assumption batch ‘81 for spearheading the event!  What a great idea!tessasgaragesalebook22.jpg

Two Month Old Persian Kittens

I got this from my friend, Gloria. I asked her if Heart2Heart could help Mitch find a home for her kittens.

These kittens are 2 month old pure persians with champion parentage (maternal ) they are doll faced not flat faced which makes them more desirable as they are not prone to the diseases of the flat faced variety. They are long coated and squirrel tailed again a desirable trait. There is 1 male (orange ), 2 females ( pure white and calico ) they have been dewormed and are litter trained, healthy, eat dried food and are used to being bathed weekly. Asking price is 6k neg.
