The interplay of Adel’s passion and profession have inevitably shaped his perspective. “Photography was instrumental in my being a surgeon. It served as an inspiration to my being an opthalmologist in that the mechanics of a camera is patterned after the human eye. I came into full circle because of photography.”
Adel began his love for photography at the age of 9 when his father gave him his first SLR. Self taught by reading, experimenting, and working under the tutelage of Pancho Escaler in 1986, Adel has been winning and continues to win several photo contests earning him recognition both locally and internationally.
He is a member of the Camera Club of the Philippines since 2009. Adel has also been tapped by Leica to conduct talks during the brand’s product launches and other events here in the Philippines and abroad.
As a photographer, Adel values sharing the emotional response he captures. “To capture a scene and seeing God’s hand in shaping the landscape. To capture a private moment that probably no one else sees, and to share that.” His philosophy is embodied in his photography: “capturing moments that will never happen again. Capture what is true and real but set your artistry free, let it soar.” He pursues life with fire and passion and his images reflect that zeal and dedication. Adel’s ultimate goal is that his photographs evoke an emotional, cerebral, and spiritual imprint on his audience.
Bien Bautista His photographs are reminiscent of saffron-robed monks and gregorian chants. Eloquent silences that breed inner peace and tranquility, joy and harmony. Some people refer to it as the transforming power of Zen. Some say it’s simply the magic that is BIEN. BIEN S. BAUTISTA, the photographer/artist, is indeed true to the title accorded him. His collection of photographs, comprising his second one-man exhibit MUY BIEN, a sequel to his first, ESTA BIEN, invites the viewer to a rare journey. The kind that transports him, pensive and unhurried, through black and white musings and colored dreams, soothing rhythms and rich illusory images that are altogether simple, pure and still like revered siesta hours in faraway childhood towns. And when he arrives, refreshed, at the waking hour, he experiences a clear and calm, translucent understanding of the self. The trip ends yet the discovery continues, for as long as man lives and breathes, and the universe is overwhelmingly peaceful… if only in the mind. Bien from out of the Blue… Bien’s formative years began at the Ateneo de Manila (elementary), followed by Colegio de San Agustin (High School) , and University of Santo Tomas (Fine Arts/Advertising.) In between, his wanderlust inspired him to become an exchange student of the Youth for Understanding program. With the barrage of acclamation, you would think that there is nothing more to say about Jijo De Guzman. However, at the core of this titan of a talent, is a humble and generous mentor whose true victories manifest in the aspiring photographers he educates and inspires through his teaching involvement with the Philippine Center for Creative Imagine and Canon Philippines. He also uses his talent for advocacy and issue-awareness campaigns. Among his recent involvements are with the Kalinga Feeding and Grooming program in Tondo and Unicef, among others.
While being a very well-rounded photographer, Jijo made his mark as the country’s premier Sports Photographer. He has shot over 60 sporting events, at least 12 of which were international events and 3 world championships.
Kakai Manotok-Arroyo and Jan Aliling Jose-Antonio “Jan” T. Aliling is a practicing lawyer by profession, but a photographer by passion.
Not to be thrown off by his jovial disposition, Jan is a seasoned litigation and corporate lawyer who is known for his no-nonsense work ethics and professionalism. He is currently the Managing and Senior Partner of Jose Antonio Aliling and Associates, and the Chairman of Acube Legal Support, Inc. He is a Supervising Lawyer at the University of the Philippines, College of Law, Office of Legal Aid and a Lecturer and Teacher at the College of Law of the New Era University.
Jan is also the Vice-President for Legal Affairs and Corporate Secretary of Jose Aliling Construction Management Group of Companies, one of the country’s largest, if not the largest, 100% Filipino-Owned Construction Management Companies.
He is also a part-owner of a several business enterprises in the food, trading consultancy, and retail services.
Amidst his busy schedule, he regularly accepts professional engagements for commercial, documentation, travel, and portrait photography shoots. He has serviced clients for photography services for brochures, annual reports, magazines, websites, and even a billboard.
However, if asked what genre he prefers to be identified with the most, he classifies himself as an “Advocacy Photographer”.
He passionately engages in Photography projects with a purpose. He has done various engagements with various agencies of the United Nations, including the UN International labor Organization and UNICEF, the Department of Foreign Affairs, and various charitable and socio-civic institutions to create awareness for their respective advocacies.
Jan has also won several awards and recognitions from various local and international photography competitions, including that of The Camera Club of the Philippines and International Photography Awards, among others. His works has been part of two published photography books: Intimate Images published by the Camera Club of the Philippines; and The Fifth Element published by Black and White Asia. He has participated in a number of photography exhibits as well.
Jan is currently a Director at The Camera Club of the Philippines.
While he has worn so many hats in his life — a bike messenger at the age of ten, a wholesaler of socks, an Avon man, copywriter, swimming and gym instructor, teacher, app software developer, entrepreneur, bar and restaurant owner, lawyer, and photographer –what he is most proud of is being a full-time father to his two boys, Yago and Nicolas.

Ancient Greek Sandals are handmade locally by skilled craftsmen using traditional techniques that have existed for centuries. The chemical-free, natural tan leather used, ages beautifully with time and wear. A raw yet feminine aesthetic distinguishes this new sandal brand. The idea was to create a flat sandal, which feels light, nude, soft and sexy. The clean round toe sole is deliberately kept light and almost disappears when worn; hence emphasizing the beautifully detailed and often intricate design of the upper part of each style. The ‘golden wing’ buckle is a trademark of the brand.Born and raised in Greece, co-founder and designer, Christina Martini is a BA (Hons) graduate in Footwear Design and Product Development from the prestigious Cordwainers College (2000). Christina previously worked as a shoe designer for Balenciaga (2008-2010), Louis Vuitton and Iris srl. Her business partner and co-founder Nikolas Minoglou, was born in London and raised in Greece. An MBA graduate from Babson College (USA), in 2006 returned to Athens and took over the family’s well established footwear business, before joining forces with Christina.
This new classic group consists of three new styles that can be worn anytime from beach to bar essentials for every wardrobe. These solid upper sandals are available in vachetta leather, pony or nubuck.
Since the first season, cut out details have been Ancient Greek Sandals’ DNA. For pre collection S/S17, four new delicate styles have been introduced which are inspired by ancient Greek ceramic vases in the form of a sandaled foot. From the easy slide Venus, to the more intricate gladiator style Dione, all are available in vachetta, nubuck or metallic crosta.
COLOURS / MATERIALS
New earthy tones such as cappuccino and khaki have been added to the AGS classic colour palette, whereas a more fun fuchsia and a classic raspberry complete the colours of the iconic vachetta leather. Nubuck, which is introduced this season, is available for all styles of the collection in a romantic light pink, khaki and black. Pink and khaki are also available in the popular pony skin. Snake is available in selected colours only: raspberry and black. As a novelty this season, all the natural wooden structures are replaced with a dark chestnut colour. Vibrant hues including red, yellow, pink and green are prominent throughout the collection making a statement as solid block colours, or as accents and decoration.
A more masculine group has been developed for this season, sandals with large pieces of leather, with straps going through, cover and hold the foot firmly. From slides to mid gladiator, these styles offer a more urban look.
The success of the Eleftheria sandal with delicate braids led to the creation of two more ‘sister’ styles. Amalia and Yianna are both available in solid classic tones or mixed colours such as platinum with black, natural or silver. The alter ego of these three braided styles are their clean version in flat vachetta in many colours.
Five styles of beautifully bejeweled sandals form this new evening group. Antique symbols engraved on metal pieces, spirals and coiled metallic lines give shape to these feminine, sandals where leather is used only when absolutely necessary.
In Greek Mythology, Clotho, Atropos and Lachesis are the three Fates who were supposedly the ‘weavers’ of life for all the mortals. The three styles of this group take their names as they consist of woven mixed media straps made out of leather, woolen threads, strings and metallic beads. This bohemian group is available in all black or natural with off white elements.
A new ‘Colour Blocking’ group is introduced this season, mixing three key vachetta tones together to create a bold stripe combination. Metallic tones of silver, gold and pink metal extend this group further, creating a sophisticated finish.
THE BLOCK HEEL
A new construction, this season is ‘the block heel’. This vintage inspired heel takes us back to the Mediterranean holidays of the 70’s Jackie O’ in the island of Scorpios or Maria Callas in Portofino. Four classic styles plus one new moccasin style are available in our trademark vachetta leather or soft nubuck combined with dark wood.
Following the success of the denim collection, this has been extended to include a tie-dye denim fabrication and patchwork denim group, which combines both light and dark to create an updated collection. Furthermore, the addition of braided denim styles adds extra diversity to this vast group.
For the first time, Raffia details have been added to key Ancient Greek Sandals styles. Multicolour or toned blue, woven raffia stripes decorate classic leather or denim styles such as Clio, Thais and Eleftheria, while intricate woven raffia flowers add a more tropical feel to the group.
For the first time Ancient Greek Sandals has developed a closed toe slide, featuring a different shape and construction from the sandals; the slipper group consist of the plain style, Pasoumi available in wide colour palette including denim, and Lysistrata, a slide loafer available in solid colours as well as colourblocking combinations.

The Sergio Rossi woman is grounded in both reality and fantasy. The heel is mainly low and supports a new creation, part moccasin and part slipper, that seeks to establish a new aesthetic of comfort and elegance. The inspiration is a model from the historical archive, with square lines dating back to the 1990s – a golden era for Sergio Rossi.The finishes are made of gold or silver. The uppers range from the minimalist to the luxurious, as in a musical crescendo rife with details (baguettes, tinted glass, mirror effects, ethnic and jungle nods). A subtle “sr1” is micro-engraved on the heels – the essence and symbol of an ideal collection to be fleshed out over time. The 6cm heel is back, thin in profile and imposing from the back, lifting sabots and sandals while remaining firmly grounded in reality.The presentation of the collection was conceived as a performance, a celebration of rebirth. It is thanks to a small crystal mouse, created in 1976, that tens of thousands of people in over 125 countries now celebrate their love of crystal! Last May 6 2017, the Swarovski Crystal Society celebrated its 30th anniversary in the Philippines at Rustan’s Makati. Many crystal enthusiasts, some who have been members since the very beginning, gathered together to witness the beauty of the special edition pieces.Every five years the Swarovski Crystal Society (SCS) celebrates an anniversary. For each of these anniversaries, the SCS has launched a special Jubilee Edition commemorating the occasion and 2017 is no exception. The SCS Jubilee Edition Swans is an exquisite tribute to this noble bird and its offspring, symbolizing a sense of belonging to the Swarovski Family. Swans have always been part of the Crystal Creations assortment, but Swarovski has never created a swan with cygnets for SCS before.
This family scene represents the strong and enduring connection between the mother and her babies. Martin Zendron designed this family to be a symbolic thank you to the loyal crystal lovers, who have been following Swarovski perhaps since the very beginning of SCS, or at least for a long period of time.

Through her exquisite, meticulously hand-painted works, Arlinda Frota, an icon in her own right, shares the amazing stories of her homeland her travels across the world.Choosing porcelain as her canvas, Arlinda has found the means, in her own words, to “bring into physical form feelings and harmony that give meaning to the universe, society, nature and humanity.” Since she took up the brush in her youth, she has held numerous exhibits, and her works have become prized pieces. In fact, one of her works as even presented as a Kofi Anan Prize given by the former UN Secretary General at the 7th World Peace Exhibition.
“The delicacy of the traditional arts, the minutiae of the details when painting flowers, trees, landscapes, birds, plants, butterflies, bees and other subjects drawn from nature or human figures, have enchanted me since my childhood. Even the touch of the porcelain itself and the brightness and light it emanates are complimentary reasons for my devotion,” Frota shares in her book, Reflections, shedding light on what inspires her to create art.
Starting May 11 until May 25, revel at her works at the 5th Level of Rustan’s Makati, and at Rustan’s Shangri-la from May 26 to June 6, The artist herself will grace the launch of the festival on May 11, sharing an afternoon with friends, family and other art enthusiasts. The next day, May 12th, Arlinda Frota will also have a meet and greet at Rustan’s Makati where her works will be showcased alongside other handsome pieces and home décor from other heritage brands, helping paint a more vibrant, evocative image of Portugal.In addition to the pieces by Arlinda Frota, have a look at the classic cookware of Silampos,bold ceramic serveware from Bordallo Pinheiro,and contemporary porcelain dinnerware and glassware from Casa Alegre.Flatware from Herdmarand Table linens from Texteis Iris will also be highlighted.The festival also coincides with the 100th Anniversary of Our Lady of Fatima and in this light, Rustan’s will present collections of Our Lady of Fatima at the festival. An exhibit held in honor of the blessed Lady will be held on the 5th floor of Rustan’s Makati from May 11-June 6.
Tickling everyone’s curiosity more for the southern European country, Portugal Divino! will also host a wonderful wine tasting afternoon, where you can savor the exquisite port wines, empadas (Portuguese patties) and pasteis de nata (Portuguese egg tarts) at Rustan’s Makati (May 12) and Rustan’s Shangri-La (May 28). On both occasions, Joao Brankinho gives a guided journey of the wonderful flavors of their distinct wine offerings.
On May 24, Vicky Barrera shares more sumptuous Portuguese food and wine pairing at Rustan’s Makati, while Chef Robby Gocco inspires the palate with healthy Portuguese cuisine at “A Taste of Portugal” food demo on June 6 at Rustan’s Shangri-la.
Along with celebrating food and the arts, Portugal Divino! will shed the light on the fashionable trends and styles with collections by Ricardo Preto and U by Ricardo Preto. Ricardo Preto’s exclusive collection for Rustan’s is inspired by movement. The designer crafted the Ricardo Preto collection using architecture as a starting point. The sharpness of the lines is tempered with softer fabrics, providing the perfect fit. From this, structured silhouettes became flowing silhouettes, in white, blue, black and earth tones. U by Ricardo Preto, on the other hand, is a collection made to provide ease of choice, ease of movement through life. Taking inspiration from the beauty present in quotidian life, the designer imagined relaxed silhouettes, in which every detail matters. Peaceful lines in flowing and soft fabrics, in a range of colors: blue, orange, white, pink and green. The famed Portuguese designer will have meet and greet events at all Rustan’s stores during the month of May.

It is rather a message of hope and growth for a future that can be pursued with work and studying, as well as through sports, competition and playing.
WORLD FOOD PROGRAM. Franklin & Marshall supported the WFP “Fill the Cup campaign. The name of the initiative was taken from the plastic cups that are widely used to serve porridge and other foods supplied by the WFP to the schools in developing countries. That is because today food in schools is a powerful network of social protection for children and their families, it improves living conditions and represents an investment in human capital from the nutritional, health, education and equality of the sexes viewpoints.
