“The Smiles of Ondoy” by Peachy Concepcion

Gk and RFM have launched massive relief efforts this past week and this is where my kids, cousins, family and friends have been. Amazing to see what the youth can do when they pull together as one. It is heartwarming to see the amount of giving going on whether in kind or in effort. People have been simply generous with their giving! Amazing 🙂

This album is for all the generous hearts who gave to the victims of typhoon Ondoy – friends from far away and friends from home. They entrusted us with their money and in turn we were able to buy goods which we delivered to the Ateneo and to the Philippine Red Cross, Rizal Chapter. We only want to thank those who helped us and allowed us to be their “shoppers, drivers, and messengers”. We want to continue to help this way and we pray that more “men for others” come our way. Maraming salamat po!!! Please let us know how we can help you help others.

The only survivor of a shipwreck was washed up on a small, uninhabited island. He prayed feverishly for God to rescue him, and every day he scanned the horizon for help, but none seemed forthcoming.

Exhausted, he eventually managed to build a little hut out of  driftwood to protect himself from the elements, and to store his few possessions.  However one day, after scavenging for food, he arrived home to find his little hut in flames, the smoke rolling up to the sky.  The worst had happened -everything was lost. He was stunned with grief and anger. “God, how could you do this to me?” he cried.

Early the next day, however, he was awakened by the sound of a ship that was approaching the island.  It had come to rescue him. “How did you know I was here?” asked the weary man of his rescuers. “We saw your smoke signal,” they replied.

It’s easy to get discouraged sometimes when things appear to be going badly.  But we shouldn’t lose heart, because God is at work in our lives, even in the midst of pain and suffering.  Remember, next time your little hut is burning to the ground, it just may be a smoke signal that summons the grace of God!  For all the negative things we have to say to ourselves, God has a positive answer for it.

Thank you Grace Genuino for this beautiful bible passage.  God has a reason for everything and just like in a marriage, in sickness and in health, for richer or for poorer, till death do us part, we should never give up on Him.   A good friend of mine told me the story of Joseph the Dreamer ( Joseph and the Technicolored Dreamcoat ) and the basic message being,  Joseph who went through sufferings for many many years, hardship one after the other…yet the bible said ” And God was with him.”

With all the series of events, downturns the country has been facing for so many years, we wonder why is it happening to us? Why is God doing this to our country? There has to be a reason….right?  We all have to look and understand God’s message.  Could it be a wake up call for us?  It is amazing how we have seen the efforts of the whole country to help all the victims of Typhoon Ondoy.  Imagine if we would be like this in helping build our nation?  Everyone trying to find ways and helping each other bring our country to greater heights!

And God is definitely with us….

Dear friends and donors,

It’s Monday, but it’s no typical working day. For the numerous victims of Typhoon Ondoy, it will take time and a lot of help before their lives recover any sense of normalcy and security.

To help speed up the collection of relief goods, Childrens Hour Philippines will receive your donations at all branches of  Rustan’s Supermarket FRESH

rustans-fresh160.jpg

and Shopwise Stores.

Please bring food, water and clothing to the customer service area of the branch nearest you, and we shall consolidate all items for pick-up by the ABS CBN , DSWD, NDCC and other institutions deploying the goods. Rustan’s Supermarkets are open from 10am-9pm, while Shopwise stores open from 9am – 11pm.

Donation boxes are available for your cash donations, but for proper acknowledgment and issuance of receipts, we encourage you to send your cash donations to our office at 5F Dominion Building, Arnaiz Ave., Legaspi Village, Makati City. How You Can Help?

By | Giving Back | 4 Comments

On Sept. 26, the Philippine capital Manila and its neighboring provinces suffered one of nature’s worst beating. Typhoon Ondoy, international code name Ketsana, poured more than a month’s worth of rain in six hours, submerging most parts of the bustling metropolis, drowning at least a hundred people as of press time. My prayers to the victims, and may we emerge victorious and live by the lessons of this tragedy. (Photos by Reuters. Music by Ennio Morricone, “Love Theme” from “Cinema Paradiso”).

I have gathered some information on how and where we can help.  I just put together everything I have so some information may be repeated or duplicated.  Thanks to my cousin, Nina, for suggesting to post this. Now is a good time to look at what you have at home and what you can spare.  Or for those who just want to buy some goods to donate would  be a great help.  It is amazing what everyone is doing to help…..
