Orla Kiely welcomes the new season, celebrating the ease and nostalgia of perfect summer’s past with a sweet, sanguine and multi-faceted collection for sultry days ahead.

Renowned for her characteristically vibrant colour palette, retro-inspired graphic prints and playful approach to design, London-based Orla Kiely has over the last decade created not just a brand, but rather a distinctive and accessible world encompassing womenswear, accessories, travel and home-wares. Spring/Summer 2009 once again salutes the trademark Kiely style – upbeat, fresh and feminine, this season with an irrepressible 70s ‘Summer of Love’ theme throughout her womenswear collection.

Enchanting Patti Boyd-like ensembles come to life as wide-brimmed floppy sun hats and striped jersey’s pair with crochet cashmere cardigans, dream 70s-style denim jeans and modest school-boy shorts. Simple summer dresses in gingham, textured silk and seer-sucker, culottes, silk scarves and light-weight trenches take you back to the romantic not-too-distant past; while beach chic makes waves with 50s-inspired bathing suits, bikinis, super-cute playsuits and pinafores, pleated, gathered and high-waisted tulip skirts alongside the perennial summer favourite – hot-pants.

Colourways follow temperate days with buttercup yellow, rose, raspberry, strawberry and cream, apple green and lavender dominating the fun and frivolous SS09 range, which includes rope-handle shoppers, slouchy perforated leather and multi-button bags. Summer blooms in endless floral prints as sunflowers, poppies, whimsical daisy chains and delicate miniature flowers are scattered alongside nautical stripes and offbeat lovebird, tortoise and elephant motifs.

Transcending pervasive fashion whims and trends with her optimistic and independent vision each season, Kiely’s combination of bold, quirky repetitive patterns and pared-back, modern silhouettes in natural fabrics has seen her launch 16 successful flagship stores in locations including London, Paris, Hong Kong and throughout Japan, with a further 500 independent stockists in the US.
