FAD is the pioneer behind Dial-A-Friend (1991); the first telephone hotline counseling for the youth and E-Mail-A-Friend, a more recent addition to our counseling services. TEENS HEALTHQUARTERS (THQ), a social franchising model, in partnership with LGUs, NGOs and academe, is a one stop youth friendly center offering information-education, counseling and select medical services.

dsc_0130.jpg

Presently, there are 13 existing THQs found around the Philippines; in Quezon City, Marikina City, Valenzuela City, Dasmarinas, Cavite, Tarlac, Baguio City, Sagada in Mt. Province, Carmen, Talibon and Ubay in Bohol, Jasaan, Opol and Tagaloan in Misamis Oriental.  FAD is also a major Resource Center working in tandem with international organizations and local NGOs in capacitating service providers by training the trainors, educating the educators on adolescent health, sexuality and development.

“Kuring,Gluring, Syerrap at Dyuning: Election is Nearing”, is the popular stand-up comedy wherein  Jon Santos cleverly mixes political satire and wit with such a delicate balance, that he brought the house down from one personification to the next.  At the end of the night, Jon successfully provides the audience with great comic relief and elevates their social consciousness to the importance of exercising their right to vote wisely in May.

The two Benefit Nights which were presented by Pioneer Insurance and Surety Corporation and Security Bank Corporation, and sponsored by Rustan’s Department Store, Stores Specialists Inc., Belo Medical Group, Directories Philippines Corporation, and Smart Communications, Inc. attracted Manila’s Best and Finest.

Meaning To Be Modern

By | Arts and Culture, Great Achievements, Proud to be Pinoy! | 5 Comments

Thanks to our friend, Hetty, for inviting us to come over and see the exhibit of her husband, Paulino!  We remember very well many years ago when we visited his home to see his beautiful collection or art and antiques!  And now this beautiful exhibit!  You cannot imagine the value of the paintings – both its financial worth and the worth of its history and beauty!!!! This in itself is an accomplishment and a legacy of Paulino to Philippine Art and for our country.

You will have to be there to believe it and see the actual paintings.  I am featuring all 80 works ( which is probably not even half his collection ) of art but it is still different to actually view them yourself.  I would say this is a once in a lifetime opportunity to view this collection and as Vita, the owner of Finale Gallery, told me, she said that she is happy that it is Paulino who owns these works of art because he is very generous in lending his paintings for others to see and appreciate in a public setting.  So do come over as it is still showing til the end of the month.

And this Saturday, March 20,  Learn more about the early Filipino Moderns with Juvenal Sanso, Mark Justiniani and Patrick Flores at 4:00 pm at the gallery.

Finale Art File is proud to show this March “Meaning To Be Modern”, a selection of Philippine paintings from 1907 to 1959.

It focuses on the early periods of Philippine modern art, spanning the initial phases of the movement with Victorio Edades,

as well as the developments hereafter: the Thirteen Moderns, incipient and late neorealism, and abstraction on the cusp of the sixties. This collection is exceptional and exemplary, surveying the watersheds of Philippine modern art, from the early part of the twentieth century to the sixties. The fifties may be considered the high point of the process of modernity in Philippine art, preceded by years of debates with the Amorsolo conservative school of romantic realism, experimentation with a range of styles from the school of Paris, and the formation of a distinct visual idiom of modern art that was cosmopolitan and uniquely Filipino.

These are the broad strokes of the sequence of modernism that the Que corpus embodies that complement those earlier mentioned: second-wave stalwarts Anita Magsaysay-Ho,

When probed more keenly, it would reveal idiosyncrasies, too: the surrealism of the early Juvenal Sanso,

the unique imagery of Alfonso Ossorio,

and Helen Guerrero Roces.

The afterglow of the neorealist flare may also be discerned in the folksy aspirations of Mauro Malang Santos.

 65mauro-malang-santos-barrio-fiesta-1955.jpg

Finally, we may want to ask about the delineation of time: Why posit the fifties as the height and limit of modernism? It may be argued that this decade signifies the defining moment of the tendency: the First Neo-Realist Art Exhibition in 1950, the First Exhibition of Non-Objective Art in 1953, the walk-out of the conservatives at Art Association of the Philippines (AAP) salon in 1955, the replacement of the conservative/modern categories at the APP with “contemporary Philippine painting” a year later, and the First Southeast Asian exhibition held in Manila in 1957. It may also be proposed that the fifties was witness to the incipient expression and later the fullness of the modern tradition, before it was to wither in the face of its own institutionalization and, in some instances, its descent into kitsch.

Aside from the art works, this collection also brings to light the significance of the Paulino Que collection, which is one of the most indispensable in private auspices and could rival the combined treasures of public institutions of modern art collection such as the National Museum, the Cultural Center of the Philippines, the Ateneo Art Gallery, and the Vargas Museum. Featuring 36 artists and 80 works, it promises to be an event in itself, a rare occasion in which a private collection becomes public discourse as students, scholars, and supporters of Philippine art gain access to it and hopefully engage it with the same discernment that went into its shaping.

The exhibition will run from March 6 to 31, 2010 at Finale Art File, Warehouse 17, La Fuerza Compound, (enter Gate 1), 2241 Pasong Tamo, Makati City. We welcome student tours. Should you request a guided tour, please call us at 813 2310 or email us finale@pldtdsl.net. Admission is free. We are open Monday to Saturday, 10am to 7pm.

Back to Basics with Ralph Lauren Spring 2010

By | Fashion, What's New at Rustan's | No Comments

The runway of the Ralph Lauren Spring Summer 2010 Collection in New York Fashion Week focused on fashion staples that have always stood the test of time. The designer turned the current crisis into positive through taking inspiration from the Great Recession that showed the spirit of American resiliency and hard work. As Ralph Lauren puts it, “I am inspired by the character of the worker, the farmer, the cowboy, and the pioneer women of the prairies.” So in place of the polo fields or any of his other pony stomping grounds, Lauren took us back to the dust bowl for Spring.

rljspring201013.jpgrljspring201014.jpg

Dominated by classics from jeans and linen to clean lines with splash of floral patterns, and finally subtle yet glamorous ensembles, the Ralph Lauren collection encapsulated what American work wear and fashion truly is. Models in newsboy caps wore faded and torn oversize jeans with blue work shirts; patchwork overalls; nightshirts in mattress-ticking stripes; or sweet calico print dresses with white ankle socks and oxfords with heels.

 rljspring20101.jpg

With four key looks that will captivate every lady’s wardrobe, the designer once again proved why he is the icon for American dressing. The collection began with Authentic Elegance wherein faded denim work wear and soft floral dresses conveyed a romantic ideal. Moving forward with the New Sophisticate, this line is more compelling with a sense of strength and sophistication in menswear inspired suiting and striking navy evening wear. Confidence and elegant purity were the main ideas for the Timeless Grace line with delicate feminine looks rendered in organdy and white linen. Finally, Contemporary Glamour ushered faded blue silks and resplendent icy metallics that reveal the heritage of denim while evoking a new style of luxurious yet simple evening glamour.

 rljspring20102a.jpgrlspring20104.jpg

Like most of Lauren’s collections, it was cinematic. From one creation to the other, the show played like a rags-to-riches tale, a story line dear to the designer’s heart. Starting with white cotton organdy dresses and some thirties-esque suits, to the work jackets and carpenter pants in blue ombré silk charmeuse, while the nightshirts came striped with beads and the overalls were transformed into a floor-grazing lamé dress. A pair of evening jeans, completely covered in silvery beads save for the fraying holes, took the concept to the limit.

In the Philippines, Polo Ralph Lauren Blue Label is exclusively distributed by Stores Specialists, Inc. (SSI) and is located at Shangri-La Plaza Mall, 158 Designer’s Blvd., Alabang Town Center, and soon to open on March in Rustan’s Makati.

Blessing of Messy Bessy Headquarters

By | Giving Back, Green | 8 Comments

Congratulations to our sister in law, Krie, and the whole Messy Bessy family!!!

messybessyblessing1.jpgdsc_9221.jpgdsc_9207.jpg

I was so happy to attend the blessing of their new headquarters!   I made sure I came early to I could do my usual investigation and take my photos before everyone arrives and it gets busy… Here is what happens behind the scenes and behind the very popular products we all buy….

I am now thinking if I should implement this schedule in our office 🙂   How nice!

dsc_9190.jpgdsc_9192.jpg

Everyone has to wear the proper uniform when in production

dsc_9188.JPGdsc_9213.jpgdsc_9197.jpg

Everything is in order and meets BFAD requirements so you are assured of safe and clean products that pass through BFAD standards

dsc_9201.jpgdsc_9195.jpgdsc_9193.jpgdsc_9196a.jpg

Messy Bessy is composed of 11 young adults.  And they are grouped into two batches- half goes to school and half works in production in the morning.  And then in the afternoon, they switch so those that went to school in the morning will be in production in the afternoon.  And take note, they still get paid to go to school.

Krie set up School H.O.U.S.E. which is an even longer term plan for them.  AMAZING!!

schoolhousemessybessylogo.jpg

messybessyschool3.jpgmessybessyschool1a.jpg

I talked to Alvin, the full time teacher, who teaches the class.

dsc_9223.jpg

He follows a module.  He told me that it is a challenge because all the students are in different grade levels.  But he said that in one month, they are able to go to higher levels already.

dsc_9225.jpgdsc_9211.jpg

I was so surprised to meet them all! Krie warned me, ” THEY ARE NOT SHY!”  🙂  And it only means that they are all confident human beings who have much potential and much to look forward to in their future.  And Messy Bessy is a stepping stone for them.  Thanks to Krie for taking care of all of them…for changing the lives of these young adults!  What an accomplishment!!

messybessyblessing2.jpg

I was quiet ( as I always am ) but I am observing everything going on and you cannot imagine how touched I was seeing all of this in front of me.  Heart2Heart was so moved that day just watching them all…God is truly good!  I have been telling Krie that she is  one of the Presidential candidates in Heart2Heart’s list.  We need more people like her!  This is just the beginning for her and if she can change the lives of 12 people, maybe one day she can make a difference for the whole country!

Looking in your eyes I see a paradise

This world that I found is too good to be true

Standing here beside you, want so much to give you

This love in my heart that I’m feeling for you

Let ’em say we’re crazy, don’t care ’bout that

Put your hand in my hand baby, don’t ever look back

Let the world around us just fall apart

Baby, we can make it if we’re heart to heart

And we can build this dream together, standing strong forever

Nothing’s gonna stop us now

And if this world runs out of lovers, we’ll still have each other

Nothing’s gonna stop us, nothing’s gonna stop us now

I’m so glad I found you, I’m not gonna lose you

Whatever it takes, I will stay here with you

Take it to the good times, see it through the bad times

Whatever it takes is what I’m gonna do

Let ’em say we’re crazy, what do they know

Put your arms around me baby, don’t ever let go

Let the world around us just fall apart

Baby, we can make it if we’re heart to heart

And we can build this dream together, standing strong forever

Nothing’s gonna stop us now

And if this world runs out of lovers, we’ll still have each other

Nothing’s gonna stop us, nothing’s gonna stop us

All that I need is you

All that I ever need

And all that I want to do

Is hold you forever, forever and ever

And we can build this dream together, standing strong forever

Nothing’s gonna stop us now

And if this world runs out of lovers, we’ll still have each other

Nothing’s gonna stop us, nothing’s gonna stop us

Nothing’s gonna stop us, nothing’s gonna stop us now

And we can build this dream together, standing strong forever

Nothing’s gonna stop us now

And if this world runs out of lovers, we’ll still have each other

Nothing’s gonna stop us, nothing’s gonna stop us now
