Rickshaw Ride Chandni Chowk Old Delhi

By | Travel | 2 Comments

Ravi our tour guide probably saw that we were not into shopping since we were not buying anything!  I guess we were still trying to assess and see what was available and was not ready to buy.  But anyway, he changed the itinerary and he decided to take us to Old Delhi.  This was scheduled for the next day but he advanced it.  This was one of the highlights of our visit to Delhi!  What an experience!!!  That rickshaw seemed to be very flimsy yet we rode it through the Indian traffic – a bit scary yet loved the adventure!  Be careful to keep your hands and arms inside or you could really get hurt.  The bumps were rough, but we were just glad we survived the trip!  🙂  These rickshaw drivers are such experts that everything seemed so easy to them when we were so tense inside the rickshaw! I took a short video and you will see how it is in the streets of India – horns blowing left and right, everyone and everything is in the road- animals, bikes, people, motorcycles, cars and pedestrian all in the same road!  Watch how the police is there yet there seems to be no order 🙂

James dressed up thinking we were just shopping and going to have dinner at a friend’s place!  Little did he know we were going to this adventure 🙂

What an experience!  I am so glad Tito Joe and Tita Mary Ann and Dad and Mom were so adventurous too!

We went down Chandni Chowk which means Moonlight Square.  According to our tour guide, it’s a way to get a feel of the Old Delhi.  He said that all the vendors in this area are all very rich even if it does not seem so

Most trucks and buses have this sign at the back – it is acceptable for them to use their horn at all times

rickshaw-ride-old-delhi-05.jpg

Took some shots along the way – a bit hard because it was a rough ride and I was scared my camera would fall or I would lose my balance, so bear with these photos.  Up to this point, I did not have to apply anything to mask any unpleasant smell

Cashmere Carpets from Kashmir

By | Shopping, Travel | 2 Comments

This was not in the itinerary but there was a request for Cashmere shawls but we ended up in the Cashmere carpet section and spent 3 hours here!  It started off by them pulling us to the showroom and this guy, Haji, giving us a background on Cashmere carpets from Kashmir.  He is a good salesman! 🙂  They are beautiful silk and cashmere carpets, but again, know your prices and the value of carpets

Many many beautiful carpets which took 3 to 15 years to make by families in Kashmir

This was a big carpet which took 15 years to make in cashmere silk – over US$ 100,000 was his starting price

Day 1 Shopping in New Delhi India

By | Shopping, Travel | 7 Comments

india-day-1.jpg

We arrived early in the morning.  It was foggy in the city.  It was like that for the 3 days we were in Delhi.

img_9036.JPG

and our bus was there to pick us up in the airport.

 img_9038.JPG

1/4 of the bus was filled with luggage for 8 people in our group 🙂

 img_9040.JPG

We were greeted in the hotel by the IVAT representative, Indra ( Asst Manager ) , and our tour guide for Delhi, Ravi, who warmly welcomed us

img_9196.jpg

We slept a bit in the room after breakfast and then followed our schedule which was to go shopping!!! 🙂  Since it was our first day- we didn’t know what to look for and we were not aware of prices so we hardly bought anything.  It became window shopping which we later on regretted. This always happens when I travel – I always think I will find something better or get a better deal and James always tells me to just buy when you see something you like! I should really learn to do just that and not think too much! Because when we are travelling we do not have much time to go back to place or look for that thing you saw and liked but didn’t buy!

They took us to this very nice place – it was very quiet and peaceful and they had many beautiful local stores showcasing Indian products.  Prices here are fixed.  Though I entered a pashmina store and they were offering discounts

santushti-market-01.jpgsantushti-market-017.jpgsantushti-market-016.jpgsantushti-market-04.jpg

Anokhi was nice – product made of Indian cotton – clothes, bed linens, table linens etc etc

Since we did not have lunch, we got a bit hungry and so we had a bite at the restaurant in the place.  A nice snack to keep us through to dinner

Across the street another small complex of shops.  Fabindia was a very nice store for textiles and some local Indian handicrafts and toiletries

santushti-market-02.jpgsantushti-market-03.jpg

This was not in the schedule but I requested to go here as recommended by my friend, Timmy.  It’s the divisoria of India 🙂  Even cheaper than Manila prices and beautiful things.  We only stayed for awhile since it was already late.  It was much cleaner than divisoria and there was no smell as we were expecting.  Bargain till the price that you want!  Something which costs 600 rupees can go down to as low as 100!  Know your prices and the value of the item.

We went shopping here on another day.  This is where the expats shop – so again it is more orderly and more peaceful with many beautiful local products from India.  Fixed prices in this area.

shopping-in-delhi-07.jpg

It’s just a small complex – one row from the front and a square at the back

Look for Good Earth, a beautiful home store with all Indian products!

The Imperial New Delhi

By | Accomodations, Travel | One Comment

We arrived at our hotel and all my fears of India disappeared! We were all happy to be in India!! It was beautiful!

imperial-hotel-delhi-015.jpg

We had to pass the back of the hotel since the front was being renovated and they didn’t allow the big bus to pass there.  At the back is the Spa and Beauty Salon ( which I didn’t have the time to visit and see anymore )

Entry to the hotel from the back
