Taipan at The Oberoi Delhi

By | Foodie, Travel | One Comment

After all the Indian food, we took a break and had Chinese food!  Everyone’s advice is just to eat in hotels, so that is what we did.  We went to The Oberoi

taipan-at-the-oberoi-delhi-01.jpgtaipan-at-the-oberoi-delhi-02.jpgtaipan-at-the-oberoi-delhi-026.jpgtaipan-at-the-oberoi-delhi-04.jpgtaipan-at-the-oberoi-delhi-03.jpg

Thank you to Tito Joe and Tita Mary Ann for the lunch treat 🙂  We are happy to be with them because they are always “game” to do anything and that goes for all the eating that we love to do!  And just like my parents, they are a very religious couple, hence the prayer before meals at all times 🙂

And they love desserts too! So most of the time we always have desserts even if we are all so full already 🙂

Indian Dinner by Rainer and Baby

By | Foodie, Travel | No Comments

Thank you to Tito Joe Mari and Tita Mary Ann, we met a wonderful couple – Rainer and Baby.  They had just moved from Manila after living there for several years.  Rainer works for Schenker

dinner-by-rainer-and-baby-011.jpg

I took note of some of the collections of Baby – she had much more than this 🙂

dinner-by-rainer-and-baby-03.jpgdinner-by-rainer-and-baby-04.jpgdinner-by-rainer-and-baby-05.jpgdinner-by-rainer-and-baby-06.jpg

And this was their view form the balcony!

The golf course

dinner-by-rainer-and-baby-09.jpg

And the other apartment buildings in their complex

dinner-by-rainer-and-baby-010.jpg

They served us cocktails in their apartment

Then we went down to the club house of the complex where we had a wonderful Indian dinner!

dinner-by-rainer-and-baby-015.jpgdinner-by-rainer-and-baby-016.jpgdinner-by-rainer-and-baby-017.jpg

Baby added a Filipiniana touch to the table setting with these capiz candleholders

dinner-by-rainer-and-baby-018.jpg

This was one of the best meals James and I had while in India.  The two starters were served in the apartment and they were really good!  And the rest was just the way we liked our Indian food to taste.

A very popular vegetarian dish I noticed is paneer which is goat cheese with spinach

dinner-by-rainer-and-baby-024.jpg

It was in this dinner that I discovered my love for Dahl 🙂  I don’t really eat beans, but I liked having this with my Indian food.  I had this in all my future Indian meals during the trip

dinner-by-rainer-and-baby-025.jpgdinner-by-rainer-and-baby-026.jpgdinner-by-rainer-and-baby-027.jpg

The chef came out to greet us!  What a wonderful meal!!  BRAVO!

dinner-by-rainer-and-baby-028.jpg

Then we had dessert – Gulab Jamun which made my sister very happy!

dinner-by-rainer-and-baby-029.jpg

Thank you Rainer and Baby for your kind hospitality and for including us as part of your kind hospitality with Tito Joe and Tita Mary Ann.  We had a great time – the food, the company and the wonderful stories.  The Philippine Ambassador to India,  H.E. Benito Valeriano, was also there to join us and he had just arrived a few months ago for his post so he is new to the country as well.

Day 2 Touring Delhi

By | Travel | 2 Comments

We had 2 full days in Delhi for touring.  What’s nice about having your own tour group is you can be flexible and choose your start time and make changes easily.  So we sometimes swap itineraries, eliminate some and we can squeeze in shopping if there is time 🙂  It’s foggy in Delhi which explains the blur in the photos and in the background.  The weather was very pleasant, it was not hot and humid, it was just right and comfortable to be walking outdoors for sight seeing.  Again, no experiences of any unpleasant odors throughout the tour

india-day-2.jpgindia-day-2-2.jpg

Delhi is beautiful.  I guess I had little or no expectations which is why when I got there, I was surprised to see what India had to offer.  Delhi reminded me of Europe – having been occupied by the British.  The structures and monuments are so beautiful

touring-delhi-06.jpgtouring-delhi-07.jpg

Sonia Gandhi lives in Delhi and we passed her residence several times while going around the city

sonia-gandhi-forbes.jpgtouring-delhi-08.jpgsonia-gandhi-forbes-2.jpg touring-delhi-09.jpg

More European influence reflected in their version of the Arc de Triomphe

india-gate-delhi.jpg

They had a like a Burnham Park ( Baguio ) type lake with boats 🙂 Notice how clean it is in the New Delhi area compared to the Old Delhi

Humayun’s tomb which inspired the construction of the Taj Mahal.  I am just so amazed at how beautiful and how vast a land was used just to build a tomb in those days!

 img_9515.JPG

When now it is so expensive to build even small mausoleums, even a box in a crypt is prime real estate!  I truly appreciate such a structure and a gesture to commemorate and bury a person, something you will probably never ever see anymore in any lifetime

Looking at the tip of the dome ( a bit hard to see due to fog ) – as you walk nearer to the arch structure, you will see that it disappears 🙂

Rickshaw Ride Chandni Chowk Old Delhi

By | Travel | 2 Comments

Ravi our tour guide probably saw that we were not into shopping since we were not buying anything!  I guess we were still trying to assess and see what was available and was not ready to buy.  But anyway, he changed the itinerary and he decided to take us to Old Delhi.  This was scheduled for the next day but he advanced it.  This was one of the highlights of our visit to Delhi!  What an experience!!!  That rickshaw seemed to be very flimsy yet we rode it through the Indian traffic – a bit scary yet loved the adventure!  Be careful to keep your hands and arms inside or you could really get hurt.  The bumps were rough, but we were just glad we survived the trip!  🙂  These rickshaw drivers are such experts that everything seemed so easy to them when we were so tense inside the rickshaw! I took a short video and you will see how it is in the streets of India – horns blowing left and right, everyone and everything is in the road- animals, bikes, people, motorcycles, cars and pedestrian all in the same road!  Watch how the police is there yet there seems to be no order 🙂

[wp_youtube]Ynv-kOF1LBo[/wp_youtube]

James dressed up thinking we were just shopping and going to have dinner at a friend’s place!  Little did he know we were going to this adventure 🙂

rickshaw-ride-old-delhi-01.jpg

What an experience!  I am so glad Tito Joe and Tita Mary Ann and Dad and Mom were so adventurous too!

rickshaw-ride-old-delhi-02.jpg

rickshaw-ride-old-delhi-04.jpg

We went down Chandni Chowk which means Moonlight Square.  According to our tour guide, it’s a way to get a feel of the Old Delhi.  He said that all the vendors in this area are all very rich even if it does not seem so

Most trucks and buses have this sign at the back – it is acceptable for them to use their horn at all times

rickshaw-ride-old-delhi-05.jpg

Took some shots along the way – a bit hard because it was a rough ride and I was scared my camera would fall or I would lose my balance, so bear with these photos.  Up to this point, I did not have to apply anything to mask any unpleasant smell

Cashmere Carpets from Kashmir

By | Shopping, Travel | 2 Comments

This was not in the itinerary but there was a request for Cashmere shawls but we ended up in the Cashmere carpet section and spent 3 hours here!  It started off by them pulling us to the showroom and this guy, Haji, giving us a background on Cashmere carpets from Kashmir.  He is a good salesman! 🙂  They are beautiful silk and cashmere carpets, but again, know your prices and the value of carpets

Many many beautiful carpets which took 3 to 15 years to make by families in Kashmir

Day 1 Shopping in New Delhi India

By | Shopping, Travel | 7 Comments

india-day-1.jpg

We arrived early in the morning.  It was foggy in the city.  It was like that for the 3 days we were in Delhi.

img_9036.JPG

and our bus was there to pick us up in the airport.

 img_9038.JPG

1/4 of the bus was filled with luggage for 8 people in our group 🙂

 img_9040.JPG

We were greeted in the hotel by the IVAT representative, Indra ( Asst Manager ) , and our tour guide for Delhi, Ravi, who warmly welcomed us

img_9196.jpg

We slept a bit in the room after breakfast and then followed our schedule which was to go shopping!!! 🙂  Since it was our first day- we didn’t know what to look for and we were not aware of prices so we hardly bought anything.  It became window shopping which we later on regretted. This always happens when I travel – I always think I will find something better or get a better deal and James always tells me to just buy when you see something you like! I should really learn to do just that and not think too much! Because when we are travelling we do not have much time to go back to place or look for that thing you saw and liked but didn’t buy!

They took us to this very nice place – it was very quiet and peaceful and they had many beautiful local stores showcasing Indian products.  Prices here are fixed.  Though I entered a pashmina store and they were offering discounts

santushti-market-01.jpgsantushti-market-017.jpgsantushti-market-016.jpgsantushti-market-04.jpg

Anokhi was nice – product made of Indian cotton – clothes, bed linens, table linens etc etc

santushti-market-05.jpg6a00e393362da08834013485a22b16970c-640wi.jpg6a00e393362da088340134876f5bc7970c-640wi.jpg5559171015095401621859720175.jpgsantushti-market-015.jpg

Since we did not have lunch, we got a bit hungry and so we had a bite at the restaurant in the place.  A nice snack to keep us through to dinner

santushti-market-06.jpgsantushti-market-07.jpgsantushti-market-08.jpgsantushti-market-09.jpgsantushti-market-010.jpgsantushti-market-011.jpgsantushti-market-012.jpgsantushti-market-013.jpgsantushti-market-014.jpg

Across the street another small complex of shops.  Fabindia was a very nice store for textiles and some local Indian handicrafts and toiletries

santushti-market-02.jpgsantushti-market-03.jpg

This was not in the schedule but I requested to go here as recommended by my friend, Timmy.  It’s the divisoria of India 🙂  Even cheaper than Manila prices and beautiful things.  We only stayed for awhile since it was already late.  It was much cleaner than divisoria and there was no smell as we were expecting.  Bargain till the price that you want!  Something which costs 600 rupees can go down to as low as 100!  Know your prices and the value of the item.

shopping-in-delhi-04.jpgshopping-in-delhi-01.jpgshopping-in-delhi-02.jpgshopping-in-delhi-03.jpg

We went shopping here on another day.  This is where the expats shop – so again it is more orderly and more peaceful with many beautiful local products from India.  Fixed prices in this area.

shopping-in-delhi-07.jpg

It’s just a small complex – one row from the front and a square at the back

shopping-in-delhi-05.jpgshopping-in-delhi-06.jpg

Look for Good Earth, a beautiful home store with all Indian products!
