Graduation Gift

By | Great Ideas, What's New at Starbucks? | One Comment

In 2006, Ninong Noey gave Jaime, his hijado, Starbucks shares as a graduation gift

starbucks-certificate.jpg

At that time, Starbucks share price was US$ 36.70

starbucks-investor-relations-histroical-price.jpg

And today, the share price is $60.00.  What a great gift that grows in years to come and what a nice way to teach a child about investment and to make them know how it feels like to own shares of a company at an early age.

Famous Names and Their Origins

By | General Information | 2 Comments

How Famous Names (mostly connected to internet) came about…

BIRTH OF THE FAMOUS NAMES

STRANGE & NATURAL CIRCUMSTANCES CREATED THE FAMOUS NAMES

MERCEDES

This was actually the financier’s daughter’s name.

 mercedes-benz-logo.jpeg

ADOBE

This came from name of the river Adobe Creek that ran behind the house of founder John Warnock.

 adobe-logo.jpeg

APPLE COMPUTERS

It was the favorite fruit of founder Steve Jobs. He was three months late in filing a name for the business, and he threatened to call his company Apple Computers if his other colleagues didn’t suggest a better name by 5 O’clock that evening.

 apple-logo.jpeg

CISCO

It is not an acronym as popularly believed. It is short for San Francisco .

 cisco-logo.jpeg

COMPAQ This name was formed by using COMp, for computer, and PAQ to denote a small integral object.

 compaq-logo.jpeg

COREL

The name was derived from the founder’s name Dr. Michael Cowpland.

It stands for COwpland Research Laboratory.

GOOGLE

The name started as a joke boasting about the amount of information the search-engine would be able to search.

It was originally named ‘Googol’, a word for the number represented by 1 followed by 100 zeros.

After founders- Stanford graduate students Sergey Brin and Larry Page presented their project to an angel investor,

they received a cheque made out to ‘Google’…thus the name.

HOTMAIL

Founder Jack Smith got the idea of accessing e-mail via the web from a computer anywhere in the world.

When Sabeer Bhatia came up with the business plan for the mail service,

he tried all kinds of names ending in ‘mail’ and finally settled for hotmail as it included the letters “html” –

the programming language used to write web pages. It was initially referred to as HoTMaiL with selective uppercasing.

HEWLETT PACKARD

Bill Hewlett and Dave Packard tossed a coin to decide whether the company they founded

would be called Hewlett-Packard or Packard-Hewlett.

 hewlett-packard-logo.jpeg

INTEL

Bob Noyce and Gordon Moore wanted to name their new company ” Moore Noyce”

but that was already trademarked by a hotel chain so they had to settle for an acronym of INTegrated ELectronics.

 intel-logo.jpeg

LOTUS (Notes)

Mitch Kapor got the name for his company from ‘The Lotus Position’ or ‘Padmasana’.

Kapoor used to be a teacher of Transcendental Meditation of Maharishi Mahesh Yogi.

 migrationlogo-lotusnotes.png

MICROSOFT

Coined by Bill Gates to represent the company that was devoted to MICROcomputer SOFTware.

Originally christened Micro-Soft, the ‘-‘ was removed later on.

 microsoft-logo.jpeg

MOTOROLA

Founder Paul Galvin came up with this name when his company started manufacturing radios for cars.

The popular radio company at the time was called Victrola.

 motorola-logo.jpeg

ORACLE

Larry Ellison and Bob Oats were working on a consulting project for the CIA (Central Intelligence Agency).

The code name for the project was called Oracle (the CIA saw this as the system to give answers to all questions or something such).

The project was designed to help use the newly written SQL code by IBM.

The project eventually was terminated but Larry and Bob decided to finish what they started and bring it to the world.

They kept the name Oracle and created the RDBMS engine. Later they kept the same name for the company.

 oracle-logo.jpeg

SONY

It originated from the Latin word ‘sonus’ meaning sound, and ‘sonny’ a slang used by Americans to refer to a bright youngster.

sony-logo.jpeg

YAHOO!

The word was invented by Jonathan Swift and used in his book ‘Gulliver’s Travels’.

It represents a person who is repulsive in appearance and action and is barely human.

Yahoo! Founders Jerry Yang and David Filo selected the name because they considered themselves yahoos.

By | Foodie | 2 Comments

It’s nice to be back at Wee Nam Kee!  It’s been two years since they opened their first branch in Ayala Triangle and two years later they have 6 branches and adding one more soon to make it 7

Previous entry:  Wee Nam Kee November 23, 2010

We visited their new branch in the new Glorietta 2, street level

Love birdcages

Linfred told us about the upcoming promotion for Wee Nam Kee which is the Yellow Hainan Chicken starting May 1.  The chicken will be flown in from Malaysia and will be available for a limited time only

He showed us the different kinds and colors of chicken, the brown one is the roast chicken, the white one is the regular hainanese chicken they serve and the yellow one which you will see is much bigger and the skin is thicker

We had other dishes as well .  Loved the Honey crispy squid!

Linfred wanted us to try one of their new dishes – the Marmite pork ribs

And the Seafood crispy noodles

James had to order his regular pork dishes 🙂

And we ordered one of each dessert dish! Linfred said he is very involved in the development of the desserts – they do not offer these in the mother franchise stores

First time to eat roti as a dessert.  I liked it!

This was my favorite of them all! 3 Flavor Chocolate Truffle Buchi! – Dark, Milk and White!

Oozing with chocolate!

Rashid is based in Singapore and handles Shipping and Solar ( Transnational Uyeno Solar ) for the TGD group.  This is a great milestone as well for their company since it is their first Solar installation in the country.  Hoping that many more others will follow suit and help save the earth

My brother, Noey Lopez, Chief Operating Officer of Rustan Coffee Corporation, explained that Starbucks has 3 Pillars – Community, Ethical Sourcing and Environment.  He is thankful to the Store development team headed by my Mom, Menchu Tantoco Lopez and my brother, Quito T. Lopez who are daring to embark on projects such as these and pioneer worthwhile investments at the same time save our earth

It was time to go up and bless the solar panels on the roof.  Father went up first with this lifter
