Torti the Tortoise

Meet Torti the Tortoise!!!  I was so thrilled when Pia told me that Torti goes around the house like a pet dog.  When we were visiting her, she asked us if we bumped into Torti in the house…so she looked for him and  found him somewhere in the den.  Pia said he is such a good pet because he is toilet trained!

Torti has a beautiful shell and Pia showed us that even his stomach is a work of art and is beautiful as well!

    Dear Lillian,

We got Tortie from a friend who used to bring in a few of these tortoises. She (yes, it is a female tortoise) was only about a year old and the size of a coaster. It was actually by accident that we toilet trained her. We used to put her on a yellow styro tray in the evenings to do her “stuff” which she eventually did regularly. Then we realized that she would only pee and poo on this yellow tray and nowhere else. When she got bigger and could no longer fit into the tray, we started putting her into a deep plastic container outside in the garden. By repetition, she figured out that this was the only place and time (early morning) that she could pee and poo. We leave her to roam freely in our living room for the rest of the day and so far (after 7 years), there have been no “accidents”. I guess in a way, we are lucky.

    Hi Pia,
Yes you are truly blessed to have a pet like her. Very rare. Wish we could find one like her. Thanks for your reply.
