Last week, James, Jaime and I went to the Collective to attend Futkalicious

I asked James to bring me along and I am so glad I did!!  Heart2Heart discovered another great Filipino in action!!! Peter Amores! It’s amazing what he did, what he is doing and what he is still about to do!! This guy has changed the lives of teenagers from Tondo by playing football in the streets!  Since 2006 he has dedicated his time and even financial resources to Futkal.

img_9285.JPG

And when I look at the boys…it makes me feel happy that someone has helped them uplift their lives for the better

Peter told me that it is not only playing football, but character formation, discipline and education.  You have to be sort of certified to be a Futkalero and abide by the rules and discipline being instilled in them

Football ( soccer ) is made available to children in exclusive schools, but what Peter is doing is he is introducing the sport to the masses and making more people enjoy the sport!

Peter himself is a good football player and at Futkal they teach soccer in a fun way – see more and watch the video:

We were so happy to see Dolores and Tito Paquito there that evening, apparently they are and have been sponsors for the kids for quite some time already. Thank you to them for supporting the kids!!!

Its costs only P 13.00 per day per Futkalero. Pls contact Peter if you would also like to help!!!

email him at:  amores_peter@yahoo.com or contact him at:  0917-700-2455

Ready Set Big School

By | Education, For kids | No Comments

Starting school is an important step in a young child’s life.  This prompts many parents to ask, “Is my child ready for Big School?”  Starting big school can be a stressful experience for children.  The days are longer, the buildings are bigger, there are more children and they are the smallest in the playground.  Much more is also expected of them in terms of academic skills.

We are very pleased to inform you that we are organizing a discussion as a response to parents’ request and need for some guidance on how they can help their child manage the transition from preschool to primary school or elementary.  The talk entitled, “Ready… Set… Big School!  A Guide for Parents” will be held on Friday, 11 February 2011 from 4:00 to 5:30 pm at the Everest Academy Administration Building.  We are fortunate to have as guest speaker, Mrs. Ma. Carolina “Maricar” Gustilo-de Ocampo.  Mrs. de Ocampo earned her master’s degree in Early Childhood and Elementary Education in Bank Street College of Education in New York, USA.  She later pursued her studies and earned her PhD in Executive Program in Educational Leadership and Management from De La Salle University. She is a well-known education consultant of many schools. She has given a number of talks on education-related topics to educators and parents.

I encourage all of you to attend this talk.  You will gain a better understanding of this big step in your child’s life, and as you understand this important step, you can manage your expectations of our child and at the same time help him/her make this transition as smooth as possible

Hope to see you all then.  Please feel free to invite your friends.

CSA Sports Complex

By | Education, Sports | 2 Comments

We were very excited when Father Julian and Father Manolo invited us over to use the new Sports complex of the Colegio San Agustin!!

csasportscomplex1.jpgcsasportscomplex2.jpg

We used the basketball court which the boys really enjoyed….

The oldies ( excluding Carlo 🙂 ) versus the young ones…and surprisingly the oldies beat the young ones 🙂

csasportscomplex3.jpgcsasportscomplex41.jpgcsasportscomplex5.jpgimg_7018.JPGimg_6966.JPGimg_6993.JPG

After the games, Father Julian toured us to the other parts of the complex and it is really world class!  Father Julian himself is very much into sports and he knows the importance of sports in the growth of the kids in school

csasportscomplex6.jpgcsasportscomplex7.jpgimg_7016.JPGcsasportscomplex8.jpgcsasportscomplex9.jpgcsasportscomplex10.jpgimg_7028.JPGcsasportscomplex14.jpgimg_7012.JPGcsasportscomplex15.jpgcsasportscomplex13.jpgimg_7009.JPG

Aside from the basketball court, the kids also used the swimming pool

ISM

By | Education, For kids | One Comment

This was a feature I was not able to release last year, which explains the dates for 2009.  But I wanted to share some ( only some since there are many )  great features of the International School of Manila. We just came from Open House which made me want to finally feature this.  Hopefully I can feature more

Heart2Heart thinks it is a really really good school!

If there is one thing my husband makes sure we invest in, it is the education of our children.  If there is one thing in this life we should ever give our children, it is a good education.  We,  as parents always want to give our best.  Though we all have different views and priorities in choosing a school for our children, finding a school that will fit them, we hope and pray that we made the right decision.

We are new parents at ISM and I particularly am overwhelmed with the school.  My husband is an Alumnae of the school so he knows the quality of education and the facilities they have but for me this is my first time to experience the school…..and I am very very impressed!

 1.)  Access to teachers

Around the second week of school, we received emails from all the teachers.  They introduced themselves and gave easy access to them to communicate with them whenever we want via email or  whatever means of communication.

Each teacher even has a blog students and parents can go to which focuses on their class

I know a lot of parents who always have questions and want to communicate with the teachers and it seems it is quite difficult because there is no access to the teacher unless you go to school – well at ISM, they make it very very easy.  Even if the school is very big, somehow, it feels small and very personalized

2.)    Then we were invited to meet with the ISM Superintendent and we got to meet some of the other new parents in school.

bkfst-with-superintendent-ism.jpg

We received many many emails on updates and Community Related Events which is nice especially for the foreigners/expats who are not so familiar yet with the country

ism-community.jpg

3.)  Every end of the week we receive our newsletters via email through their website

 mspublicationism.jpg

4.)  They have Power School which is a great way for the parents to monitor the progress and performance of their children – Their grade per subject at any given point in time, attendance, tardiness.  Amazing!

powerschool.jpg

5.)  Open House – This is really a great idea!!

 sc002f924a.jpg

All parents come over and go through the whole schedule of the kids and they get to meet the teachers, teachers introduce themselves and what the kids will be learning for the year.  You get to see the classrooms as well.  Very impressive.

What was also nice was that the teachers we met come from different countries from all over the world- Spain, United Kingdom, America,  etc etc.  This was last year’s schedule and we were running all over the school from floor to floor – we had 5 minutes to get to class.  It was  actually fun. We get to meet other parents as well and find out that our kids are classmates 🙂

sc0005481e.jpg sc00058a34.jpg

Each classroom has a computer for the teacher to use and a projector screen where lectures are being presented through powerpoint!

img_6762.JPG

6.)  Parent Teacher Conference

And even the PTC is very organized and very efficient

 p1120124.JPG

7.)  Security

They have very good and tight security on campus- whether you are a driver, yaya or parent.  You cannot enter the school without an ID.  And all the security guards are very proper, respectful and very professional

sc001383f6.jpg

On our way out- wow, we saw the soccer field at night!  They have great sports facilities too!

 img_6761.JPG

After all this, I told my son that i hope that he would take advantage of this great opportunity and blessing that he has.  The school is there, but it is up to the student to absorb and make the most of what is offered to him.  I look forward to more learnings not only for my son but for us as parents.
