Baby Shower and Fondue!

By | Celebrations, Foodie | 6 Comments

The gang got together to celebrate the forthcoming arrival of baby girl Rianna!

laus-baby-shower1.jpg laus-baby-shower2.jpg

It was again another excuse for us to eat our favorite meal together, fondue!  If there is one thing in common with the group, it is our love for fondue!  Every single one of us love fondue and nothing can be more fun than to have everyone enjoying each other’s company at the same time enjoying the meal…I must admit that as the meal started, I could not listen to Raul as he was telling us stories about his F1 experience in Singapore, I was too engrossed on eating the fondue! and I think the others were too 🙂

I specifically bought these black fondue plates for our fondue dinners only to find out that it is a bit too small to fit the rice… you will be shocked at how much sate rice we can eat when we are eating fondue.  But nevertheless, no one wanted to change their plates and instead used them still

laus-baby-shower4.jpg

My cook prepares all the fondue sauces:

Top:  Bernaise and Peanut butter – Bernaise being the most popular so I have to make 5 times the amount of this sauce compared to the other sauces

Bottom:  curry, tartare and spicy catsup

laus-baby-shower3.jpg

They let me prepare the sate rice and fondue sauces and then everyone else brings something so it is pot luck:

Bulgin and Lils – Beef and dessert -Frozen brazo de Mercedez

Pael and Yvonne – Wine and Ostrich – it was our first time to have ostrich and it was a good and healthy addition

 Raul and Jeanne – Pork

Anto – Chicken – though we missed Anto who could not go last minute

Eds- her famous chocolate chip cookies

We do not use fondue pots in my house because it might get too smoky indoors and since we are a big group.  So we have my cook prepare everything already.  It works well for us because we get to eat it right away and not wait for it to be cooked.  The plates have to be refilled 2 or 3 times!

laus-baby-shower5.jpglaus-baby-shower6.jpg

After dinner, Yvonne had some baby shower games prepared!

Game # 1:  Measuring the wasteline of Mommy Lau 🙂

laus-baby-shower7.jpg

Game # 2:  Daddies have to put on the diaper of their babies/stuffed toys!  🙂  Of course Raul was the best at it!

lausbabyshower8.jpg

The weird looking ( monkey wrapped in a diaper ) one was made by James who obviously does not know how to put on a diaper 🙂

Game # 3:  Question and Answer by Daddy and Mommy

Gilak by Hossein

By | Foodie, Great Achievements | 6 Comments

As promised, we visited the newest restaurant of Mr. Hossein, Gilak.  This is his 5th restaurant already.  Mr. Hossein is the only one who knows all the recipes of his food.  He prepares everything in his commissary and then sends it to his restaurants. You can imagine how hard he works and how hands on he is in his business. Hossein will always be our all time favorite restaurant!

 gilak1.jpggilak2.jpggilak3.jpggilak4.jpggilak5.jpg

This room can be made into a private function room.  It has a nice view of Greenbelt 5

gilak7.jpggilak6.jpggilak8.jpg

Nelyn, long time waitress in Persian Kebab and now a supervisor already.  She is the one who always takes care of us and she knows already what we want when we arrive.  We have known her as long as we have known Hr. Hossein

gilak9.jpg

The restaurant was full and I congratulated Mr. Hossein on his continous success and he told me “It is because I love God!”:-)

We later on found out that it was Mr. Hossein’s birthday that evening.  What a coincidence for us to have been there….or maybe not.. because for some reason, I kept insisting that we go to Gilak despite the heavy traffic.  We were so happy to have been there on his special day

gilak10a.jpg

He gave us many words of wisdom and advice on life.  God gave him a second chance to live and this has made him realize many things which he shared with us.

When we were leaving, Mr. Hossein told us that he would like us to come back to Gilak and this time he will choose the dishes we will eat.  I guess for all the years that we have been going to Persian Kebab, we order the same thing all the time. Every single time!  So, finally he probably could not resist but offer and let us try some of his other delicious dishes. So two weeks after, we went back as his guests

 gilak11.jpggilak12.jpg

It was the BEST meal we had in his restaurant…. mostly because it was an honor to be served  and hosted by Mr. Hossein himself.  It was a delicious meal and one experience we will never forget!  Thank you very much Mr. Hossein!

Roti Channai – WOW!! YUMMY!!!

 gilak13.jpg

Naan bread with Borani spinach, Chicken Dopiaza and Greek Salad

gilak14.jpg

Then Mr. Hossein started mixing everything and making it into a sandwich!   YUMMY!!

gilak15.jpg

Shrimp kebab ( Persian style ) !!!! Wow! That sauce that goes with it is my my type!!! I put it in my rice!!!

gilak16.jpg

Lamb Shank

gilak17.jpg

Chicken Kebab

gilak18.jpg

We normally order fried rice, but this time Mr. Hossein served us saffron and Biryani rice which went very well with everything

gilak19.jpg

Then he mixed the two kinds of rice together, put the sauce from the kebab then mixed in some strips of chicken kebab – LOVE IT!!!

gilak20.jpg

Shrimp Tandori kebab – WOW!!!!!!! Also YUMMY!!

gilak21.jpg

Mr. Hossein knows what I like….he got the rice and put it on the sauce of the tandori!! YUMMMMMY!!

gilak22.jpg

WOW!!! WHAT A MEAL!!! Everything was YUMMY and perfect!!!

I think that was the most “YUMMY” words in one feature!  We are so spoiled now that we better make sure Mr. Hossein is there whenever we go!

There are 380 dishes in the menu of Hossein/Persian kebab and Gilak.

hosseins-persian-kebab03.jpghosseins-persian-kebab04.jpghosseins-persian-kebab05.jpghosseins-persian-kebab06.jpgricehossein.jpg

Mr. Hossein told me that he reads his recipe books atleast 2 hours a day to learn more recipes, more techniques in cooking, etc etc. Now you know why he is successful at what he is doing.  He never stops learning and discovering new things.  He told us about a Shawarma salad and a new kebab which will be in his menu….WE CAN’T WAIT!!!  And a sandwich bar which he will also open!  WOW!!  Till the next eating adventure with Hossein!

Josie

Josie is a friend who I met in Mothers Club.  I also bump into her in Rustan’s in almost all the home events.  She says that the Home floor at Rustan’s is her favorite place. Now I know why! SHE LOVES TO COOK!

She is definitely my friend because she loves Rustan’s! 🙂

Josie took up Nutrition as her major and after her studies, she has been in the hospitality industry for 20 years.  She has always dreamed of opening her own restaurant, so finally she did.  She started doing it as a sideline under her brand JOSIE,  but later on decided to do it full time and opened Ensaymada Factory.   She told me,” It is a small business, but it is MINE! and I am very happy!”  and I guess being happy with what you are doing is most important.

I admire my friend, Josie, for starting her own business and doing what she always dreamed of.

Thank you Josie for a wonderful afternoon!  I will definitely cross the street and visit you everytime I go to Shopwise Pasong Tamo!

josieempanadafactory1.jpg

The first thing that caught my attention when I came in…..what a nice poster!

The Ensaymada factory is located in Pasong Tamo right across Shopwise.  It is a very cozy place.  Josie told me that she named her place after the Cheesecake Factory in the States.  I asked her if she is known for her ensaymada, and she said not really and that just like the Cheesecake Factory, it does not serve only cheesecake but has a wide variety of dishes in their menu

josieempanadafactory2.jpgjosieempanadafactory3.jpg

Pastries:  Flourless Cookies, Yema, Empanada, Ensaymada, Cheese Roll and Brownies.  Josie wakes up early in the morning to bake her daily goodies which she sells in her store

josieempanadafactory4.jpg

More Pastries: Chocolate cake, Canonigo, Chocolate Cupcakes, Apple Crumble and  Food for the Gods

josieempanadafactory5.jpg

Banana Cake

josieempanadafactory6.jpgchefs-special-josie.JPG

YUMMY!  We both shared those 3 dishes!! I ate more than her!  🙂 These dishes reminded me of one of my old time favorites, Yum Yum Tree Coffeeshop at Rustan’s.  It does not exist anymore so it was a nice way of reminiscing.

Beefsteak Tagalog, Garlic Chicken and Pork Binagoongan – YUMMY!!!!!!!!!!!!!

josieempanadafactory7.jpg

Josie served all of this to me! She taught me a new way of eating ensaymada ( photo under the canonigo slice ).  She flattens the ensaymada in a teflon pan till light brown and then serve with additional grated queso de bola and sugar.  Yummy!! and come to think of it, I want to add butter to that!  🙂

josieempanadafactory8.jpg

Josie also makes packed meals and she gets a lot of orders for functions, meetings and events

josieempanadafactory9.jpg

I still need to go back to try the other things on her menu! She says I need to try her Sinigang na Bangus and Laing Pasta…. I WILL BE BACK FOR SURE!

Rama Mahal

By | Foodie, Travel | No Comments

One of the restaurants we like going to while in Subic.  The owner, Ram Sharma, is a very nice guy.  He is always there to greet you then he disappears to the kitchen and starts cooking 🙂 We like the breads, the hummus, the lamb chops and curry

This is becoming an annual celebration – all the birthday celebrants of September – Dad Monching (Sept. 4 ) , Gerry ( Sept. 5 ), Margs ( Sept. 1) and Jaime ( Sept. 2 ).  Too bad we missed Gerry who could not make it this time due to a patient call.

Thanks to Dad and Mom for preparing and hosting

It’s always nice to celebrate with a mass and of course by our good friends, Fr. Manolo and Fr. Julian who are always part of the family

Pink Kitchen 2008

By | Events and Launches, Foodie, Giving Back | 2 Comments

pinkkitchen2008layout1.jpgpink-kitchen-ad_v.jpg pinkkitchenvendors1.jpgpinkkitchenvendors2.jpg

It is Pink Kitchen this October – the same yummy event you enjoyed so much last year. This time, it is even better, yummier with more new food items to choose from. We have gathered almost 50 chefs and caterers to participate. Aside from that, we have again twisted the arms of “seasonal cooks” whose specialties are served only in their homes, like Wynn Wynn  Ong, Mona Bishier Valdez and Mariko Jacinto to name a few. They are cooking Burmese, Indonesian and Japanese food respectively.  Wynn and Mona are no strangers to Pink Kitchen having sold the most, while Mariko is a new participant and she will delight you with her Japanese creations.

Adding to the excellent food and wine to enjoy are pocket activities scheduled at 2, 4 and 6pm for 2 days on different topics. They are: Kid’s baking with Mel Francisco, author of Witchkins; Coffee Preparations with Robert Francisco of Boyd’s Coffee; Wine Appreciation with Ines Cabarrus of Enderun Colleges; Healthy Cooking with Rob Pengson, TV Host of Chef-on-the-Go; Cake Creations with award-winning Pastry Chef Buddy Trinidad and Look Good, Feel Good Skin Program by Becca cosmetics of Adora.

The organizing committee is headed by Kara Alikpala (Pres. of ICanServe), Bettina Osmena (Chairman, Fund-Raising) Beth Romualdez (Chairman, Pink Kitchen), Libet Virata (Chairman, Marketing and Sponsorship) Via Romualdez-Reyes (Project Manager), Alice Orleans, Executive Director, ICanServe; Ina Vergel de Dios(,Physical Arrangements); Ria Romero, Lian Chua (Finance) and Marge Jorillo.

We have put all our efforts together for a common goal: to raise funds for the benefit of the underserved women with BREAST CANCER. Our thrust, of course, is early detection and that is why ICanServe has launched projects like “Ating Dibdibin” ( the first community-based screening program in Marikina) and Silver Linings which was recently held in Cebu. I am inviting you to log on to ICanServe website –www.icanserve.net to know more about the projects being done to increase awareness, fight ignorance and fear among women with cancer.

It is a very worthy cause. I am inviting you once again to enjoy the week-end of Oct. 18 and 19 (Saturday and Sunday) with your family at the Rockwell Tent. This is your chance to savor your favorite foods and seldom- seen- food items, being waited on by the hospitality students of Enderun Colleges inside a beautifully decorated Tent. Be there at the opening at 11am for lunch, followed by a merienda break at 3pm. Walk around a little at the mall then come back for wine and dinner and some entertainment at 7pm till 10pm. All day at 200 pesos for adults and 100 for kids entrance fees.

Please call us for tickets – Beth or Via: 0929 848-2918

With much appreciation, Beth
