iGone Auction, Ukay Ukay and More for Ondoy Victims

By | Classifieds/Segunda Mano, Giving Back, Great Ideas | One Comment

Catching up with Christine over dinner and what she has been up to….

Though she has a day job, she told me she likes to do more social work!  and instantly I love the girl even more and felt so happy and fulfilled for our friend, Gil, to have married someone like Christine.  Sometimes we are so caught up in our careers,  in our own lives, and here is someone who thinks of others first before all that!

Anyway, she told me about what she did last year during the Ondoy tragedy.  Because I can’t keep up with all my facebook friends, I failed to see what she did and I thought it was an interesting idea.  So I am featuring it here now still.  It’s never too late to BE INSPIRED!  What creative ways on how people can help others.  Again, Christine teaches me the value of working hard to help others- sometimes we are so busy we just give money or we just make it easy for ourselves and just clean up our things and just give it away.  Christine and her friends did something else….. And here is how they did it!

Step 1 AUCTION in Facebook and “Ukay Ukay”

Christine and her officemates, who are also her bestfriends, collected all their valuable things which they thought they could auction.  That way they can raise more money since some of the items are collectibles.  Everyone gave up many things from their personal collections or closets and posted it in facebook in their IGone page

They set up photo albums of the items that were to be auctioned.  Read carefully how they described each album 🙂

“These are bags that were previously love and lovingly chosen…but whose owners felt they would be put to better use to generate funds for families victimized by Ondoy”

 igonephotoalbums2.jpgphotoalbumsigone.jpgigonebags.jpg

Had I known about this, I would have  bought something for my Dad here, he loves these things!!!

Many beautiful and branded items which they gave up and sold

While the auction was going on, they had the “Ukay Ukay” Sale in their office for 3 weeks.  The logic behind this was that instead of giving these clothes away and not knowing if they will fit that person or if will be appreciated, they sold it to people who will actually pay for it and will personally use them – hence everyone benefits accordingly.  I suddenly felt bad giving away all my clothes and other personal stuff, putting them in boxes and just giving them away. Then now wondering whether they even liked it or got to use it.  So I thought this was a good idea!

They are so good at marketing!! Signs around the “Ukay Ukay” sale 🙂

Their company matched whatever money they raised!! How generous! 1-sign-200.jpg

STEP 2  Packing of relief goods

The Auction and Ukay Ukay was just the beginning.  After 3 weeks, they raised a lot of money!!! And they bought goods and repacked them.  They turned their office into a packing center:-)  Thanks to supportive bosses who allowed all this to happen!

Wow!! 1,623 relief bags!!  You can more or less compute how much they raised!!! GREAT JOB GUYS!!!

Step 3 Distributing the Relief Goods

Still it is not yet over, they all went themselves and distributed the goods

MISSION ACCOMPLISHED!!!! It’s amazing what people can do to help others!

Help Haiti

By | For kids, Giving Back | One Comment

Two saturdays ago, Javier had a school activity to help raise money for the Haiti Victims.  Its always good to involve kids and make them be aware and let them know that they can help in their own little way.  It’s a good thing he goes to a good school that can teach him these values

The Grade 4 boys had a car wash

dsc_8231.jpgdsc_8243.JPGdsc_8223.JPG

They helped others and yet they had a great time 🙂

dsc_8212.JPGdsc_8215.JPGdsc_8220.JPG

Even Ms. Puno, their teacher, joined and helped out!

dsc_8237.JPGdsc_8251.JPGdsc_8287.JPG

While the boys class did the car wash, the girls class had a bake sale.  I missed the first day where I heard they raised quite a big amount of money 🙂 The girls actually baked the goodies and sold them.  Congrats to the girls!

dsc_8226.jpgdsc_8230.jpg

I only caught the second day where they just had a few items for sale…but it was nice because the boys supported the girls by buying their food and drinks after a tiring car wash day 🙂

A Race to Save the Reef – Condura Race for Tubbataha Feb. 16, 2008

The race kit

dsc_8305.JPG

This time, I wanted to cover the event differently, instead of waiting in the finish line, I wanted to be on the skyway and take photos of the 21k and 42k runners. I woke up at 2:30 am to get to the Fort to look for Ton to find out how to get to the skyway

dsc_8313.JPGdsc_8317.JPGdsc_8319.JPG

Ton was not in sight so by 3:30am I just decided to go to the skyway myself and just try my luck. Ton told me that I needed to be in the skyway by 4am

dsc_8315.JPG

I got to the skyway

dsc_8330.JPG

and this guy, Paul, approached me when my car dropped me at the toll booth.  My car could not enter so it was just me

dsc_8340.jpg

He was kind enough and got approval to let me join them and stay with them…

Sometimes we take for granted the people who do all the preparation and hard work in planning for the race..Thanks to the Condura team for all your work!

dsc_8334.JPGdsc_8339.JPGcondura14.jpg

so from around 4 am to 5am we were just waiting for the runners to come

dsc_8326.JPGdsc_8345.JPG

We got so excited when we saw some runners approaching already! This was our first sighting

 dsc_8346.JPG

It had been an hour since the start for the 42k runners

The first runners to pass and leading the pack

dsc_8352.JPGcondura6.jpgcondura2010dolphins1.jpgcondura2010dolphins2.jpg

Paul told me that this guy is the oldest runner in the race- If I remember correctly he said 83 years old!!! WOW!!!! and he was one of the first runners in the lead and he was doing the 42k!!!!!!

Starting to get some light and more runners on the skyway….

dsc_8457.JPG

Jim, for some reason, I can never get a shot of you- you run too fast!! 🙂

 dsc_8467.jpg

More light…..

dsc_8480.JPG

And finally I see Ton on a motorcycle! He had come from the end of the track and on his way back already

dsc_8514.JPGdsc_8518.JPG

dsc_8504.JPGdsc_8501.JPGdsc_8493.JPGdsc_8508.jpgdsc_8511.jpgdsc_8519.jpg

Of course I could not miss Tessa coming! And she has many poses.  She is the only one that stopped and posed for me many times so she has plenty photos 🙂

By around 6:30 am, I had to leave the skyway to catch my husband and son who should be in the finish line
