M&S Double Decker Bus Gives a Fivefold Experience with Children’s Hour

By | Giving Back, SSI Group Inc | No Comments

As one of the UK’s leading retailers, Marks & Spencer, continues to tailor products and services towards the ever changing consumer lifestyle, the British brand concurrently gives back to the world through innovative and unique ways that are wholesomely rewarding to souls in need. Together with Philippine Airlines, be surprised on what M&S brought to our shores this 2015.

Since its establishment, the business was built together with strong values of Innovation, Inspiration, Integrity, and In touch. It was definitely through their strong intangible foundation and heart of doing business that made them arrive and reach places beyond their homeland. This year, together with the loving hands of Children’s Hour, a social development organization that provides various programs for children in need of education, health and nutrition, protection, and financial support, Marks & Spencer engraved a once in a lifetime experience to these kids—an educational fieldtrip in a M&S Double Decker bus as means of transport.

M&S Double Decker Bus Gives a Fivefold Experience with Childrens HourFrom a child’s curious mind, it is as if there are so many things to learn and uncover about the world. An educational fieldtrip can feed a constantly wondering mind, unleash inner brilliance, discover potentialities, elicit interests, and explore horizons. It is discovering beyond the four walls. The brand believes that every young soul out there deserves an unforgettable childhood experience that they get to grow and extend from. The fun-filled and interesting activities M&S planned and lined up happened last September 1 to 5.

Thrilled of actualizing this activity, M&S started off the weeklong educational trip at The Mind Museum, with the Grade 3 students from Sto. Rosario Elementary School. The schoolchildren got to see how expansive the universe is from constellations up to learning how pre-historic time is like. It was an interactive and fun way in getting to know how Science works and familiarizing on how it plays a role in their daily lives. Joining the activity from Children’s Hour are Geenete Garcia, Executive Director, Kristine Milette, Resource Mobilization Associate, and DJ/Host Sam Oh, with the M&S team.

With noses pressed on windows, the students from Center of Excellence in Public Elementary Education (CENTEX) together with the Marks & Spencer team, and volunteers from Children’s Hour merrily went to Manila Ocean Park last September 2. The students enjoyed viewing different marine animals, watched a sea lion show, and were able to get a close encounter with the stingrays. Indeed, this was a fulfilling day for all of them as they fascinate themselves on how aquatic life is like.

On the third day, there were indigent kids who travelled a long way from Talim Island, Binangonan, Rizal for an educational tour in Intramuros. Joining the historical tour was Ms. Patricia Bermudez-Hizon, Celebrity Ambassador for Children’s Hour. The students learned about the life and works of our national hero through the interactive displays. They were also amazed on how the Philippine historical past looked like as they passed by homes that were designed and built during Spanish colonization.

All hyped-up and had their game face on for the fourth day, the children from House of Refuge were joined by the Stallion Football Club, volunteers from Children’s Hour and Marks & Spencer Philippines for a day of sports. The children were grouped and each team was assigned with a coach from the Stallion Football Club to guide them on the basics of football. It was an enriching activity for them as they learned the value of teamwork and of course, the idea of practice makes perfect. Indeed, amidst the exhaustion, the genuine smiles of the kids made it all worthwhile.

The fifth day and last day was with Patricia Bermudez-Hizon, Celebrity Ambassador for Children’s Hour. She chose to celebrate her birthday by hosting a Basketball clinic with the kids from Talim Island, Rizal. It was through this activity wherein the children found out what skill they can offer to make their team win, and having interest towards the sport as well.

Before ending each day, all students and volunteers were given a bag of M&S food items to serve as tokens of appreciation. The five consecutive days with the brand’s Double Decker bus and the planned activities were a success as each child definitely went home with an experience that they would cherish and remember for a lifetime. After all, having a fieldtrip on an iconic British bus does not happen every day.

Marks and Spencer is one of UK’s leading retailers, selling stylish, high quality, great value clothing and home products, as well as outstanding quality food, responsibly sourced from around 2,000 suppliers globally.

Originally on display at the Museum Foundation of the Philippine’s MaARTe Craft, Food, Art & Design Fair 2015, only 5 pieces of luggage art will be up for auction on September 12, hosted by Leon Gallery. Rimowa Luggage (2)

Jason Montinola
(Philippines, b. 1979)

“The Reverse”, 2015

Jason Montinola is a master of the subconscious, reinventing a visual language that is deeply rooted in the past but imbibed with the strangeness and familiarity of today, a reintroduction of tradition with otherworldly imagery.

Rimowa Luggage (6)

His solo exhibits include: Absent, West Gallery (Philippines, 2015); In The Absence of Struggles, Jogja National Museum (Indonesia, 2015), The Sensational Painter, Secret Fresh Gallery (Philippines, 2013); Infamous at Artesan Gallery + Studio (Singapore 2013); Theatre of Absurdities at OUR Art Projects MIA Art Centre (Malaysia, 2013); Sinister at West Gallery (Philippines, 2012); Here Lies the Painter at West Gallery (Philippines, 2011) and The Black Carnival at the Big and Small Art Gallery (Philippines, 2010). Montinola  has participated in numerous group exhibitions in Manila, Negros Occidental, California, New York and Malaysia.

Martin Honasan

(Philippines, b. 1976)

“Untitled”, 2015

Before painting became his full-time vocation, Martin Honasan worked in advertising as a visual artist and art director, and a managing partner of his own design firm. He has since had five solo exhibits, including: Singularity at Art Galileia (Philippines, 2014); The Weight of Glory, Now Gallery (Philippines, 2013); The Human Hide, The Crucible Gallery (Philippines, 2013); Then We Shall See, Ysobel Art Gallery (Philippines, 2012); Digging In The Dirt, Yellow Door Gallery (Philippines, 2011).

Rimowa Luggage (7)

Honasan has also worked with other artists in group exhibits, art conventions and art fairs, and has been prominently showcased in features from The Manila Bulletin, The Manila Times, The Philippine Daily Inquirer, The Philippine Star, Catalog Magazine and BusinessWorld.

Gus Albor

(Philippines, b. 1948)

“Lips and Fingertips”, 2015

Augusto “Gus” Besido Albor is well-known for employing cerebral abstractions in his paintings, layering color after color to achieve a trademark transparency. His sculptures, on the other hand, are recognized for their combination and contrast of human-made materials and natural elements.

Rimowa Luggage (4)

Among the major exhibitions and art events he joined in the Philippines, USA, Germany, Hong Kong, Japan, and China include: the First Selection of Philippine Art, the Museum of Philippine Art (Philippines, 1981); 100 years of Philippine Painting Exhibition, the Pacific Asia Museum (USA, 1984). In 1976, he was given the Thirteen Artists Award from the Cultural Center of the Philippines, and the Art Association of the Philippines Award in 1977.

Xian Lim

(Philippines, b. 1989)
“Act 1”, 2015

In Xian Lim’s works, he explores the idea of honesty in terms of the way every artwork he has seen, whether in person or in photographs, are filtered through him: his personal beliefs, experiences, and history. He rendered his own interpretations of acclaimed works based on how he perceives them. It is evident that he did not intend to recreate the artists’ brushworks nor replicate each detail; rather his purpose is to express honesty through painting and making these artworks his own.

Rimowa Luggage (1)

Anthony Palomo

(Philippines, b. 1962)
Buenviaje, 2015

A former member of the Salingpusa art group, Anthony Luis Palomo’s works emphasize the spontaneity and subconscious creation of abstract expressionism with an overlap of analytic and synthetic cubism.

Palomo won several national art competitions, such as the Shell National Students Art Competition in 1991, winning the Grand Prize (Watercolor Category), and the Metrobank National Painting Competition in 1994, also winning the Grand Prize (Watercolor Category). He also received a finalist citation in the 1999 Philip Morris Philippine Art Awards, and represented the Philippines at the Perak Art Festival (Malaysia, 1997) and the Philippine Independence Day celebration travelling group exhibition (Germany, 2004).

Rimowa Luggage (2)Max Balatbat
(Philippines, b. 1978)

“Hawla”, 2015

Maxbal’s personal journey in art stems from his commitment to find truth and essential goodness in the derelict, tumult and chaos, adopting architectural abstraction to show beguiling elements of different structures, unassuming subjects and other uninviting locations as interesting, labyrinthine images of different shapes and constructs in a variegated palette.

Rimowa Luggage (8)

Maxbal had his first solo exhibit, Avenida, at the Art Center (Philippines, 2010), and two-man shows in 2009 and 2011. He has been participating in group exhibits in Manila, Thailand, Korea, Singapore, and Italy, including the World Expo in Shanghai and the Philippine ART TREK in Singapore.

Ferdie Montemayor

(Philippines, b. 1965)

“Going, going, going home”, 2015

Montemayor is one of the prolific artists of our time. His acrylic on canvas paintings use patterns, monochromatic blurs to convey communal experiences, inviting viewers to personal introspection of events depicted. He was cited in 2004’s Metrobank Foundation Awards for Continuing Excellence and Services, 1995’s Most Outstanding Visual Artist of Antipolo, the 13 Artist Awards in 1994.

Rimowa Luggage (3)

He participated in group exhibits such as Alay 13, Boston Gallery (Philippines, 2010); 2/60, Kaida Gallery (Philippines, 2009); 12×9, West Gallery (Philippines, 2008); Through the palette’s Eye, Cultural Center of the Philippines (Philippines, 2007); DosPorDos, Boston Gallery (Philippines, 2006).  Solo exhibition highlights include TauTauhan, Kaida Gallery (Philippines, 2008); Home, Kaida Gallery (Philippines, 2007); ’hay Pinoy, Big & Small Art Co. (Philippines, 2006).

Heart Evangelista

(Philippines, b. 1985)
“Upstream”, 2015

Originally escaping to art for its therapeutic benefits, Heart Evangelista discovered herself to be an effective and creative communicator of various, powerful emotions through oil on canvas, employing a colorful palette that focuses on a singular figure known as “the girl”, who figures in many of her paintings.

Rimowa Luggage (5)

Her exhibits include Love Marie: A Solo Exhibition of a World Class Filipina, Love Ongpauco, chichi Chan Hampe Gallery (Singapore, 2015) and I Am Love Marie: The Art and Works of Love Marie Ongpauco, Ayala Museum (Philippines, 2014), wherein all paintings were sold out on opening day.

The kids were scheduled to do something cultural. We booked them on a Bambike Tour. which was recommended by Gina. A new way to tour Intramuros. They went to 10 different places on a bamboo bike. Weekday is best since it’s not as busy to ride the streets.
Plaza San Luis Complex is where the headquarters of Bambike located and also houses historical memories of Old Intramuros. This complex is composed of five houses, namely – Casa Manila, Casa Urdaneta, Casa Blanca, Los Hidalgos and El Hogar Filipino. So much more fun when you are in a group! 🙂  Bambike Eco Tours by Bryan Mc Clelland (11)

My partner in crime, beautiful Gina Tambunting Roxas 🙂 We so bravely took on the challenge of hosting 16 friends of our kids for their graduation trip to our country. We have been planning this for so long and having a companion to achieve this makes it easier and better yet more fun.  Today we were spies 🙂 and joined the bamboo bike tour and followed the kids by car.   We didn’t really spy!! We wanted to see what this was all about. And it’s really a fun way to tour Intramuros.  The kids really enjoyed! Great idea partnerBambike Eco Tours by Bryan Mc Clelland (23)

What a view from up there.

Japanese Cannons from the Battle of Manila in 1945 are pointing outside the walls, waiting for the right time to fire. This mossy area where these cannons are located gives an aura on how important Intramuros is in the Philippine history.

My very active batchmate, Yvonne Dayrit Romualdez with Fr. Gerard Deveza who is very close to the Dayrit family and who celebrated the Holy mass for the event.  Yvonne was always a leader- whether it be our class President or the batch President – when we were in Assumption Highschool.

Tacloband (17)

During the Pope’s visit, Yvonne was so lucky to have been able to attend the mass in Tacloban with the Pope!!!!! Good thing she loves us and prayed for us while she was there!!! And it was because of her most touching experience that she and her family decided to help and build homes in Tacloban!

[embedyt]https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2HY92AzA7ME[/embedyt]

Last month, she was able to build more than her goal of 40 homes through TACLOBBAND a dinner featuring a band that was a victim of Yolanda. They sang for us while we had a wonderful dinner by Chef Jessie Sincioco. God is definitely working through Yvonne who brings us closer to God

I requested him to sing the response from that mass with the Pope which he sang in Waray “Lord your word is my spirit and my life” (Ginoo Espiritu ug kinabuhi an imo mga pulong) together with Edwin Espino who was asst to the conductor during the Pope’s mass but had to conduct the choir when the conductor had to go to a shelter to protect the instrument. How lucky they are to have served the Pope during his visit

For more than a year I have been waiting for a project that I could join in ( in behalf of me and my cousins ) to help the Yolanda victims.  I wanted to participate in a project where we could be involved and not just donate the money.  Then just a week ago, my good friend and batch mate, Yvonne Dayrit Romualdez, told us about her upcoming project.  So glad we found what we were looking for!!!
