Consuelo Foundation 25 Years of Giving Hope

By | Arts and Culture, For kids, Giving Back, Great Achievements, Tributes | One Comment

Consuelo Foundation’s 25th Anniverary from Thirtysixomedia on Vimeo.

This is one of the most amazing foundations I have ever encountered.  Thank you Mia Andal Castro for inviting me and sharing Consuelo Zobel Alger with Heart2Heart!  A few days ago I was talking to my youngest son about people who give to charity and how some people who have no family pass on their inheritance and just give everything to charity.  And here it is a true story about a woman who gave everything she had…the beauty of which will help generations and generations to come.  What a wonderful woman with a big heart.  I am so happy to have discovered this foundation even 25 years after.  Please take time out to read about the foundation and about this woman.  And go catch the exhibit at the Ayala Museum which was extended till the 16th of April

The Consuelo Foundation may well be one of the most genuine untold charity stories in the Philippines.

 consuelo-foundation-logo.png

That’s because for over 25 years, one foundation has been quietly helping those in need, particularly children, women and families in the Philippines and Hawaii. Untold stories like Consuelo Foundation’s are interesting in that it projects a true sense of wisdom. Both the story and its works have stood the test of time; a testament to the purity of the vision and passion of one woman.

It began in 1987 when wealthy heiress Dona Consuelo Zobel Alger had been approached by Child and Family Service Philippines (CFSPI) head Patti Lyons for funding. Consuelo eventually became CFSPI’s main benefactress, which later on opened a Consuelo Zobel Alger home, a residential center for street children in Baguio City.

It was here where Consuelo Zobel Alger found her inspiration. Having no children of her own, it was the children supported by her program that she cared for as her children. In 1988, she created her own private foundation, the Consuelo Zobel Alger Foundation to improve the quality life of disadvantaged children, women and families in the Philippines and Hawaii.more-than-75million.jpg

The foundation focused on supporting programs for the prevention, protection and recovery of abuse victims as well as programs that created opportunities for disadvantaged children, women and families.

dsc_1013.jpgdsc_1071.JPGconsuelo-foundation-beneficiaries.jpgdsc_1042.JPG

When Consuelo passed away in 1992, her endowment was given to the foundation where it was invested. This is where her legacy lives on. Today, the earnings from the investments are sustaining the Consuelo Zobel Alger Foundation. Since its inception, the foundation has given over 75 million dollars or 3 billion pesos to help her cause.

 consuelo-foundation-board-of-directors.jpg

Apart from illustrating Consuelo’s passion to her cause, it shows off her financial sense. The foundation is a prime example of an organization that illustrates the impeccable use of financial savvy to create self- sustaining philanthropy.

It is this quiet yet highly involved foundation that has quietly given throughout its 25 years devoid of corporate or political motives that illustrates a true sense of charity. A pure mission to give to those in need may explain how it has continued to give for 25 years, even after Consuelo’s life. It’s a testament that genuine and sincerity stand the test of time, a true legacy that can be passed on for generations.

About Consuelo Zobel Alger

Born in the Philippines in 1914, Consuelo Zobel Alger grew up in a prominent Manila family whose ancestry dates back some 400 years to the Spanish conquistador Ponce de Leon.

Consuelo married a young American officer, James Dyce Alger, who was stationed in the Philippines. He retired and resettled in Hawaii with Consuelo where he died in 1986.

In an act of extraordinary grace, Consuelo Zobel Alger created the Foundation in 1988 to improve the lives and living conditions of disadvantaged children, women and families throughout the Philippines and Hawaii.

Consuelo passed on November 29, 1990 though her memory lives on forever through the legacy of good works perpetuated by her establishment and endowment of Consuelo Foundation.

“My mission will begin after my death. I will spend my heaven doing good on earth…”

Consuelo Foundation Programs

Early Childhood Care and Development

OUR HEALTHY START PROGRAM addresses early childhood care and development for high risk families with children ages 0 to 5 years old. It’s anchored on the belief that nurturing children and providing them with positive stimulation will prevent child abuse and neglect.

Parenting education is provided through homevisits and sessions that empower parents to learn what young children need to grow healthy and well. Various other services are provided to the parents and their community to ensure a caring and safe environment for their children.

Youth and Empowermentcted, abused, and exploited children,

OUR LIFE SKILLS FOR CHILDREN AT RISK PROGRAM helps teens from poor families improve their sense of self-worth and protect themselves from neglect and abuse. It provides them access to life skills training, alternative learning systems, technical and vocational training and civic engagement.

Child Abuse Prevention and Advocacy

OUR CHILD ABUSE PREVENTION AND INTERVENTION NETWORK (CAPIN) promotes and implements a strong multidisciplinary approach to child protection.

 show-of-force-the-child-abuse-prevention-and-intervention-network-in-pampanga.JPG

Stakeholders in a community, composed of police, courts, social workers, attorneys and doctors are brought together to create an efficient and effective network with a standardized approach to helping child abuse survivors. Together they create a locality that is responsive to the needs of survivors and protective of all children. Among its goals are the development of case management systems, limiting the retraumatization of victims by reducing the number of times they need to recount their ordeals, and the institutionalization of these initiatives in the local governments where they operate.

Protection and Recovery of Survivors

OUR PROTECTION AND RECOVERY PROGRAM provides intervention to survivors of child sexual abuse. This program allows us to give hope to survivors of abuse through the implementation of our holistic Caring, Healing and Teaching approach in various shelters and institutions across the country.

“GIVING HOPE” – AN ART EXHIBIT (Open to the public from April 6-16, 2013)

The “Giving Hope” exhibit highlights the child abuse prevention and treatment programs of Consuelo Foundation gathering artworks of children and young adults from Luzon, Visayas, Mindanao and Metro Manila – a fitting tribute to celebrate 25 years of Consuelo Foundation. Consuelo’s vision was “to renew hope for those who have lost it and give hope to those who have never had it.” It is the same vision that guides her Foundation and inspired this exhibition.

 dsc_1005.JPGdsc_1020.jpg

The artworks were created by children who are either survivors or at-risk of abuse, neglect and exploitation under the tutelage of art educator, Bambi Mañosa of Creative Kids Studio.

 dsc_1009.JPG

They created their own interpretations of themes that resonate imageries and traditions of the different regions where the workshops were held like large-scale flowers, paper machie birds, huge lanterns using a variety of medium.

 dsc_1026.JPG

The artworks reflect the hope and aspirations of children ages 4 to 21 who have experienced a renewed sense of hope through the generosity of Consuelo Zobel Alger.

Gem Palace Jaipur

By | Great Achievements, Travel, Tributes | 3 Comments

One of the highlights of our Jaipur trip was the visit to Gem Palace!  Precious and semi precious stones come from different parts of the world, but they are sent to Jaipur for cutting and polishing.  The best craftsmen are Muslims.  So if you are looking for beautiful jewelry, Jaipur is the place to go.

gem-palace-jaipur-01.jpggem-palace-jaipur-02.jpggem-palace-jaipur-03.jpggem-palace-jaipur-04.jpg

Vintage car collection of the owner by the garage

 Inside the store

gem-palace-jaipur-06.jpggem-palace-jaipur-08.jpg

After a few minutes of viewing, the owner arrived.  Actually he is the son of the owner.  Munuu, the father, had just passed away three months ago.  See his photo at the back. Siddharth took us to a private floor of the store and started showing us his collection!  Which of course is also for sale and shown only to special clients.

gem-palace-jaipur-010.jpg

Siddharth also goes to New York every now and then to attend to his clients by private appointment only

gem-palace-jaipur-044.jpg

One of his clients Dianne Von Fustenberg.  She loves the pieces she buys from Gem Palace because she always receives many compliments.  That’s a Gem Palace necklace she is wearing.  She sends photos of herself wearing the jewelry to Siddharth 🙂

gem-palace-jaipur-031.jpg

Munuu is known worldwide.  He was a very good designer and jeweler.  Watch out for his book, it will be coming out by next year

gem-palace-jaipur-030.jpggem-palace-jaipur-028.jpgmunuu-gem-palace.jpg

And now Siddharth took over, who by the way is still single.  I was ashamed to ask how old he was 🙂

gem-palace-jaipur-029.jpg

Siddharth starts bringing out his collection- this is a piece for the MMA of NYC which will be exhibited soon

gem-palace-jaipur-011.jpg

Beautiful bangle with rubies- made by his father

gem-palace-jaipur-012.jpggem-palace-jaipur-013.jpg

Oh my gosh!  Those diamonds look so big but the most valuable part of this necklace is the emeralds!

gem-palace-jaipur-015.jpg

Behind the diamonds

gem-palace-jaipur-014.jpg

He put those two pieces together and this is how it can look!  Mom tried it on! 🙂

gem-palace-jaipur-017.jpg

Another beautiful piece which he put on me 🙂

More beautiful pieces

A beautiful HEART emerald!!

gem-palace-jaipur-024.jpggem-palace-jaipur-025.jpg

James loves asking jewelers to show him pink diamonds claiming he will buy them for me 🙂  So Siddharth shows some pink colored stones

gem-palace-jaipur-026.jpg

He says that this is the stone that is getting to be popular now- Pink Spinel

gem-palace-jaipur-027.jpg

Which is why he is collecting loose pieces 🙂

gem-palace-jaipur-037.jpg

The table was full – it was as if we were looking at fashion jewelry!

gem-palace-jaipur-032.jpggem-palace-jaipur-033.jpggem-palace-jaipur-034.jpggem-palace-jaipur-035.jpggem-palace-jaipur-036.jpg

Siddharth showed us this piece which he said he will use on his head when he gets married

gem-palace-jaipur-038.jpg

Afterwhich he will give it to his bride to wear as a belt!  What a lucky bride 🙂

gem-palace-jaipur-039.jpggem-palace-jaipur-040.jpggem-palace-jaipur-041.jpggem-palace-jaipur-042.jpggem-palace-jaipur-045.jpg

We went down because the brother of Munuu, who is partner in the business, wanted to meet us too.

gem-palace-jaipur-046.jpg

He showed us this bridal piece which is meant for the Saudi Arabian market.  This is worn by the bride

gem-palace-jaipur-047.jpg

With a matching head piece which Maricar wore 🙂  All this selling at around US$ 1 million

gem-palace-jaipur-048.jpg

James made sure he signed the book to say he visited the Gem Palace! haha!! He thinks he is Brad Pitt! 🙂

This was really Brad Pitt, and I am wondering what he bought for Angelina 🙂

Embroidery of Shams and Kohinoor Jewellers Agra

By | Great Achievements, Travel | 4 Comments

Another must see place if you are already in Agra!  The beautiful embroidery museum by Shams

kohinoor-jewellers-01.jpg

Photography is not allowed – I got this from the brochure – it is much much more beautiful in person.  So if you are visiting the Taj, give 30 minutes to come see this – it is spectacular.  The embroidery is mixed with jewelry by Kohinoor Jewellers.  Very rare pieces which took Shams many years to make.  He eventually went blind because of the strain the embroidery put on his eyes

kohinoor-jewellers-029.jpggood-sheperd-shams.jpgbouquet-of-flowers-shams.jpg

Outside the museum are pieces made by students of Shams – these are the only ones for sale but of course not as beautiful as the master

Team Bon Chon

By | Foodie, Great Achievements | 2 Comments

Heart2Heart loves Bon Chon!  So happy there are many branches in Makati nearby – Petron Dasma Station, Alpha Land and now here in Bonifacio High Street Central!

team-bon-chon-01.jpgteam-bon-chon-02.jpg

We arrived at 1130am and this is how it was but after 30 minutes the place was jam packed and with a long line outside the door!

team-bon-chon-03.jpg

James and I were so happy and honored to meet the very young, handsome and single 🙂  owner of Bon Chon!  Scott Tan!

He is only 30 years old and he runs almost 30 stores of Bon Chon in just two years!!  Amazing!!!  And he is working on many new projects which will hopefully be announced here too at H2H!  It was a Saturday and he told me that he has R & D meeting and food tasting in the afternoon after our lunch and he usually does his rounds to the stores on Saturdays!  No wonder he is so successful!

team-bon-chon-04.jpg

We ate so much that day!!  Bon Chon has expanded their menu into so many new food choices.  And Scott is very much involved in R&D.  He says that the mother company is not strict and that they can add whatever they want in the menu.  Which is perfect for him because he is very creative and innovative

team-bon-chon-05.jpgteam-bon-chon-06.jpg

Bulgogi was just a special offer at one time but because customers were requesting for it, they kept it on the menu

team-bon-chon-07.jpg

This is my favorite!! I asked him if he will venture into having other flavors like the other wings restaurants have, he said no, he will stick to the concept.  I was hoping for my garlic and parmesan wings 🙂

anniversary-esl-mtl-03.jpg

My sister’s gift 🙂

anniversary-esl-mtl-02.jpg

with their photo!! How stylish my Dad and Mom!!!

anniversary-esl-mtl-04.jpg

Happy Anniversary!!  I would like to share a note from a classmate of Dad which I felt he was right on target!

I was just talking to a friend recently that people should give more priority to relationships in life rather than to work or material gifts. I have to remind that friend of mine, though, that there are persons who are able to do both successfully. And I can cite you and Menchu as a good example.

Please continue to be a model couple who values a happy marriage. God bless!

Jolan

Surprise Cheer For Michelle

By | Celebrations, Great Achievements | 6 Comments

I received a text from my angel friend, Isa as she was organizing a party for Michelle.  Michelle was recently diagnosed with breast cancer and Isa wanted to cheer her up, so she invited the Belenismo gang to surprise her

Our hosts – Inseparable Mother- daughter team who we all love!

for-michelle-09.jpg

Yvonne prepared all the headgear!  We just chose which one to use

for-michelle-03.jpgfor-michelle-04.jpgmichelle-party-1.jpgmichelle-party-2.jpgmichelle-party-4.jpg

The gang while waiting for everyone to arrive before we surprise Michele

for-michelle-010.jpg

And here she is! SURPRISE!!!

for-michelle-011.jpg

I have always known Michele to be so alive, always happy and always eating!! 🙂

She is hilarious! She posed for us on top of her coffeetable! This girl does not need any cheering up!  She is more cheerful and alive than any of us!!!

It’s amazing how Michele has remained positive and in high spirits and never did she ever feel bitter or sad.  She in fact has been thankful and grateful to God for all the blessings He has showered in her life.  And that I believe is why she has managed to go through all this and  is completely healed!!  Michele told us that it was her birthday gift knowing that she was healed! Heart2Heart admires this very strong and courageous lady!

for-michelle-012.jpg

And of course she has full support from all her sisters, her family, her friends!!

Apparently they have been having chemo parties in the hospital every time before every session. Yvonne showing me a photo from her phone of one of the chemo parties!  She told me that they are very strict in the hospital but now because they saw how happy it makes the patient, they are now allowing parties

for-michelle-08.jpg

Tita Isabel and Isa brought all the food!!!  And we also added some dishes! michelle-party-3.jpgfor-michelle-013.jpg

Michelle enjoying!! This girl never stops talking about food and eating – yet she is so sexy and slim eversince!  We enjoyed all her funny stories in the dining table and we learned one lesson – never to eat with the Dayrit sisters or else you will end up paying for the bill!! haha!!!  You will have to ask Michele to tell you their stories to understand that 🙂

The Belenismo gang!  Watch out for the upcoming Belenismo in Tarlac this coming November!

Spanx® inventor and founder, Sara Blakely, is named Forbes’ Youngest Self-Made Woman Billionaire.  Blakely, who graces the cover of the special issue joins the short list of other American self-made woman billionaires, including Oprah Winfrey and Meg Whitman.  The Forbes cover story highlights how Blakely turned $5,000 savings into a global phenomenon. In an interview with Anderson Cooper in his daytime tv talk show in America, Blakely shares how she felt the moment she discovered she was on the Forbes’ Billionaires’ List.  “Honestly, it still feels so surreal. It still hasn’t sunk in!  It’s been a pinch me moment!”

The inspiring entrepreneur says that aside from her family, she is most proud of achieving this level of success that is certainly beyond her wildest dreams. With her creativity and unyielding passion, Blakely has definitely inspired budding entrepreneurs out there to follow their dreams and not be afraid of failure.  “I think fear prevents so many people from pursuing their ideas.  Failure to me is in not trying rather than in not succeeding.” This valuable piece of advice which she got from her father inspired her to always want to push herself out of her comfort zone.

Blakely also explains that her way to success was definitely no easy feat. She drove around begging mill owners to help make her idea but was turned down a good many times until one day, she got a call from a mill buyer from Neiman Marcus who said he decided to help her with her crazy idea – and the rest, as they say, is history.

“I really am just like anybody else out there.  I found myself in a place where I think many people can relate to but I made the decision and I committed to that decision to figure it out for myself.  It took a ton of hard work.  It was a roller-coaster but I feel amazingly blessed to be doing what I do, and I love every minute of it”, shares the successful entrepreneur. When asked what her number one tip for a woman who is starting in business or dreaming of starting one, Blakely has this to share: “You’ve got to trust your gut.  I didn’t have any background in what I was doing.  Trust your gut – it’s a really good compass.  The other thing is to differentiate yourself.  You’ve got to know why you’re different, why you’re better – and your customer needs to know why you’re different and better and they need to get it in 30 seconds or less.”
