NYFD’s Diner

By | Foodie, Great Achievements | 4 Comments

Thanks Dexter for inviting us over to your diner!! We enjoyed very much!

We admire you for your vision and determination in starting your own business and looking forward to seeing it come through to even greater heights!  More power to you!

NYFD has almost 40 franchised carts, 6 Premiere outlets and now a diner concept.  I mentioned to Dexter to open his diner concept in other locations so more families can enjoy his food.  He said he is still experimenting and perfecting the concept before he expands.  Dexter told me that this business is his baby which he started 6 years ago.  Dexter is a food lover, loves cooking and also likes creating dishes which he sometimes adds to his menu.

Itayo Natin Ang Ating Bandila!

By | Great Achievements, Proud to be Pinoy!, Tributes, What's New at Starbucks? | 7 Comments

I have been hearing about this woman from my sister Krie and from Dad and Mom…and I had the chance to finally meet her. Her name is Mercy Corrales.

Heart2Heart is very proud to feature her as I am sure she will be an idol to many women and Filipinos out there – just like how she has made me proud.

mercy2.jpgmercy1.jpg

Mercy started off in Human Resources for Levis ( LSPI ) in the Philippines and even knew my grandmother working with her in Rustan’s.  She later on became CEO of Levis in Brazil and then in Japan. She was with Levis for thirty years. Afterwhich, she became the CEO of Starbucks in Japan which has almost a thousand stores and sales of around a billion US dollars.

Imagine a woman being the CEO in a male dominated society like Japan?

She is the only woman who was awarded by the Harvard Business School in Japan as Business Statewoman of 2008.

And recently she was asked to be the President of Starbucks Asia Pacific which includes the Philippines.

 mercedescorraleslg.jpg

I heard Mercy telling my Dad about her conversation with Howard Schultz over the phone when Howard called her about the new job offer..  Mercy told Howard… “I am going to SHAKE THINGS UP and I am going to disagree with you sometimes!”  Howard was very happy to hear that and agreed that that was what he wanted.  I also heard that she even dictated her terms as to what countries she could cover and how often she could come back to the Philippines…..that’s how good she is!

Mercy has given talks in Japan to many people from all over the world… many of them are amazed and asking her how she did it and how she made it to where she is now.

She told us over dinner that one of the reasons she wants to retire already is because she wants to be able to do something for the country…. she said that most of her career she has been helping overseas countries and companies. Hmmm…. the fact that she represents our country and makes us proud to be Filipinos…is already great service to our country!

“Itayo natin ang ating bandila,” she says!

A Lawyer in the Family

By | Great Achievements | 4 Comments

I met Ria when she was 3 years old and she had just arrived from Chicago where she lived!  Ria was the niece of my boyfriend, James, now my husband.   She was like my younger sister then and we spent a lot of time watching over her.  That was around 23 years ago…….

I can’t believe how time flies!  Ria is now a graduate from law school! Congratulations Ria!!!   We are so proud of you!!  We are so lucky to have a lawyer in the family to protect us! 🙂

And I love her grad picture which I thought was very creative – she borrowed Yoda from my Dad as props for this photo!

Centennial Renewal Project

By | Events and Launches, Great Achievements | One Comment

It takes great leadership with vision and a great team to implement that vision! The past 3 years have been a time of transformation for the Manila Polo Club in preparation for its 100 years anniversary.  Congratulations to all those that helped make all this possible – the past 3 administrations, the committees and to our friend and General Manager, Pat Puyat-Palanca.  Pat told me that they hired her for this purpose and this project.  I can confidently say that they did hire the right person for the job!

Dr. Arnold Salud

 dsc_1662_2.JPG     dsc_1664.JPG

Arnold has a new look now…with the moustache and all 🙂

Heart2Heart is so proud to feature Dr. Salud!

The reason Doc Arnold could not join us for lunch was because he was rushing to go to his clinic. So, he stopped by to say hi and then left to service the long line of patients waiting in line to see him. He is one of the partners in American Eye Center.  And just to prove to you how good the center is, when I entered there were chairs in the front of the clinic with patients with numbers waiting to be called.

We went straight to Arnold’s clinic and he was busy so we just took a short peek…The doctor in action

How Cool is That?

By | Great Achievements | 5 Comments

I saw a post of my friend, Crisann, in her multiply site and I asked her if I could share it here at Heart2Heart.

God has His ways!  Sometimes we wonder why or how we can have the worst problems in life or the lowest times in our life…….. then suddenly everything turns out for the better.  And in Crisann’s case, DOUBLE the happiness!  God never ceases to amaze us!

She wrote down 3 lines which caught my attention…..( and I just added photos )

Gilak by Hossein

By | Foodie, Great Achievements | 6 Comments

As promised, we visited the newest restaurant of Mr. Hossein, Gilak.  This is his 5th restaurant already.  Mr. Hossein is the only one who knows all the recipes of his food.  He prepares everything in his commissary and then sends it to his restaurants. You can imagine how hard he works and how hands on he is in his business. Hossein will always be our all time favorite restaurant!

 gilak1.jpggilak2.jpggilak3.jpggilak4.jpggilak5.jpg

This room can be made into a private function room.  It has a nice view of Greenbelt 5

gilak7.jpggilak6.jpggilak8.jpg

Nelyn, long time waitress in Persian Kebab and now a supervisor already.  She is the one who always takes care of us and she knows already what we want when we arrive.  We have known her as long as we have known Hr. Hossein

gilak9.jpg

The restaurant was full and I congratulated Mr. Hossein on his continous success and he told me “It is because I love God!”:-)

We later on found out that it was Mr. Hossein’s birthday that evening.  What a coincidence for us to have been there….or maybe not.. because for some reason, I kept insisting that we go to Gilak despite the heavy traffic.  We were so happy to have been there on his special day

gilak10a.jpg

He gave us many words of wisdom and advice on life.  God gave him a second chance to live and this has made him realize many things which he shared with us.

When we were leaving, Mr. Hossein told us that he would like us to come back to Gilak and this time he will choose the dishes we will eat.  I guess for all the years that we have been going to Persian Kebab, we order the same thing all the time. Every single time!  So, finally he probably could not resist but offer and let us try some of his other delicious dishes. So two weeks after, we went back as his guests

 gilak11.jpggilak12.jpg

It was the BEST meal we had in his restaurant…. mostly because it was an honor to be served  and hosted by Mr. Hossein himself.  It was a delicious meal and one experience we will never forget!  Thank you very much Mr. Hossein!

Roti Channai – WOW!! YUMMY!!!

 gilak13.jpg

Naan bread with Borani spinach, Chicken Dopiaza and Greek Salad

gilak14.jpg

Then Mr. Hossein started mixing everything and making it into a sandwich!   YUMMY!!

gilak15.jpg

Shrimp kebab ( Persian style ) !!!! Wow! That sauce that goes with it is my my type!!! I put it in my rice!!!

gilak16.jpg

Lamb Shank

gilak17.jpg

Chicken Kebab

gilak18.jpg

We normally order fried rice, but this time Mr. Hossein served us saffron and Biryani rice which went very well with everything

gilak19.jpg

Then he mixed the two kinds of rice together, put the sauce from the kebab then mixed in some strips of chicken kebab – LOVE IT!!!

gilak20.jpg

Shrimp Tandori kebab – WOW!!!!!!! Also YUMMY!!

gilak21.jpg

Mr. Hossein knows what I like….he got the rice and put it on the sauce of the tandori!! YUMMMMMY!!

gilak22.jpg

WOW!!! WHAT A MEAL!!! Everything was YUMMY and perfect!!!

I think that was the most “YUMMY” words in one feature!  We are so spoiled now that we better make sure Mr. Hossein is there whenever we go!

There are 380 dishes in the menu of Hossein/Persian kebab and Gilak.

 hosseins-persian-kebab01.jpghosseins-persian-kebab02.jpghosseinbreadsoup.jpg

hosseins-persian-kebab03.jpghosseins-persian-kebab04.jpghosseins-persian-kebab05.jpghosseins-persian-kebab06.jpgricehossein.jpg

Mr. Hossein told me that he reads his recipe books atleast 2 hours a day to learn more recipes, more techniques in cooking, etc etc. Now you know why he is successful at what he is doing.  He never stops learning and discovering new things.  He told us about a Shawarma salad and a new kebab which will be in his menu….WE CAN’T WAIT!!!  And a sandwich bar which he will also open!  WOW!!  Till the next eating adventure with Hossein!

Josie

Josie is a friend who I met in Mothers Club.  I also bump into her in Rustan’s in almost all the home events.  She says that the Home floor at Rustan’s is her favorite place. Now I know why! SHE LOVES TO COOK!

She is definitely my friend because she loves Rustan’s! 🙂

Josie took up Nutrition as her major and after her studies, she has been in the hospitality industry for 20 years.  She has always dreamed of opening her own restaurant, so finally she did.  She started doing it as a sideline under her brand JOSIE,  but later on decided to do it full time and opened Ensaymada Factory.   She told me,” It is a small business, but it is MINE! and I am very happy!”  and I guess being happy with what you are doing is most important.

I admire my friend, Josie, for starting her own business and doing what she always dreamed of.

Thank you Josie for a wonderful afternoon!  I will definitely cross the street and visit you everytime I go to Shopwise Pasong Tamo!

josieempanadafactory1.jpg

The first thing that caught my attention when I came in…..what a nice poster!

241619524603_0_alb.jpg

The Ensaymada factory is located in Pasong Tamo right across Shopwise.  It is a very cozy place.  Josie told me that she named her place after the Cheesecake Factory in the States.  I asked her if she is known for her ensaymada, and she said not really and that just like the Cheesecake Factory, it does not serve only cheesecake but has a wide variety of dishes in their menu

josieempanadafactory2.jpgjosieempanadafactory3.jpg

Pastries:  Flourless Cookies, Yema, Empanada, Ensaymada, Cheese Roll and Brownies.  Josie wakes up early in the morning to bake her daily goodies which she sells in her store

josieempanadafactory4.jpg

More Pastries: Chocolate cake, Canonigo, Chocolate Cupcakes, Apple Crumble and  Food for the Gods

josieempanadafactory5.jpg

Banana Cake

josieempanadafactory6.jpgchefs-special-josie.JPG

YUMMY!  We both shared those 3 dishes!! I ate more than her!  🙂 These dishes reminded me of one of my old time favorites, Yum Yum Tree Coffeeshop at Rustan’s.  It does not exist anymore so it was a nice way of reminiscing.

Beefsteak Tagalog, Garlic Chicken and Pork Binagoongan – YUMMY!!!!!!!!!!!!!

josieempanadafactory7.jpg

Josie served all of this to me! She taught me a new way of eating ensaymada ( photo under the canonigo slice ).  She flattens the ensaymada in a teflon pan till light brown and then serve with additional grated queso de bola and sugar.  Yummy!! and come to think of it, I want to add butter to that!  🙂

josieempanadafactory8.jpg

Josie also makes packed meals and she gets a lot of orders for functions, meetings and events

josieempanadafactory9.jpg

I still need to go back to try the other things on her menu! She says I need to try her Sinigang na Bangus and Laing Pasta…. I WILL BE BACK FOR SURE!
