Lush has been manufacturing luxury handmade soaps since the mid 1980s. Bubble Bars
Invented by Helen Ambrosen in 1998. She wanted to recreate film star bubble baths for, at this time, the art of the bubble bath was dying. However, she also wanted to be able to eradicate the packaging from bubble bath. So, Helen created a simple base of tartar and sodium bicarbonate, to which all sorts of essential oils and fresh ingredients are added to create the solid bubble bar slices we know and love. This enabled us to cut out preservatives too. To use, simply crumble under warm running water to create masses and masses luxurious, softening bubbles. The bubble bath is back and you can have towers of foam if you want to! Patented.

Bubble Bar Wands
Helen Ambrosen invented the re-usable bubble bar itself in 2008, for one of our SPA treatments. A fantastic idea from the creative team was to then put this formula on a stick, creating these fantastic bubble bar wands. They are made from multi-use bubble bar mixture, which means you can swish them around in numerous baths to create skin softening bubbles, then place on the edge to harden ready for next time. Mo Constantine OBE proceeded to invent the first Lush household product from this idea. Thus the Washing Up Fairy flew into town! Lush invented solid bath oils in 1999 and named them, quite simply, Bath Melts. Molten almond oil and Fair Trade cocoa butter form the heart of this bath time treat and really moisturise, soothe, soften and plump up the skin, leaving it silky smooth. Bath Melts are one of the most luxurious things you can put in the bath. Immersing yourself in beautiful, emulsifying and wonderfully fragranced butters is like luxuriating in a bath of moisturiser.
The Melting Snowmanluxury bath melt (Php 145) … back again this year, pop him in the bath water and watch as he behaves like true snowmen do when left in the sun and melts into the warm water, leaving it all silky and moisturising for the skin. Cocoa and shea butters are fantastic emollients and intensely moisturising, helping to protect the skin against the cold; while almond oil is incredibly softening. This year he’s got a beautiful, comforting, spicy and warming hot toddy fragrance of cinnamon oil, clove leaf, lime oil and sweet orange oil. Massage Bars
Chocolate bars were the inspiration for Mark Constantine OBE, who invented Lush’s range of gloriously scented, environmentally conscious, preservative and packaging free solid massage bars. An alternative to massage oil, we prefer to use lovely butters, like fair trade cocoa butter, that melt on contact with the skin and blend them with effective essential oils – much more efficient than messy oils that run all over the place! By including oils in the butter formulation we have been able to control the melt rate, so you can melt the exact amount required between your palms for the perfect massage
Midnight Massage(Php 425) … perfect for enjoying a cheeky massage before the clock strikes Midnight and see where things take you! A deeply moisturising base of cocoa and shea butters are blended with comforting vanilla absolute and sensual jasmine, along with some forbidden fruits such as fig, carob pods and quince extract that act as a humectant, helping to nourish, hydrate and protect the skin. Lip Scrubs
Invented by Rowena Bird, who knows how important it is to have gorgeously soft, smooth, kissable lips at all times! Lush’s lip scrubs each have a base of castor sugar and jojoba oil, along with a few other essential oils to make them yummy. The castor sugar gently exfoliates away any dry, flaky skin from the lips whilst the jojoba oil moisturises, leaving lips feeling soft, smooth and plumped up.
Popcornlip scrub (Php 495) … this one tastes so much like popcorn, you won’t be able to resist licking it off! Your lips are one of the most delicate and sensitive areas on your body and susceptible to the elements, especially in winter. Take a small amount of this lip scrub and apply to lips in a circular motion – the castor sugar will gently scrub away any dry flaky skin while the organic jojoba oil will soothe any redness and soreness. Follow with your favourite Lush lip balm to keep your kisses soft, nourished, delicately scented and mistletoe ready! Sugar Scrubs
Invented in 2010 after working with the BBC’s Apprentices inspired us to create our own set of ‘sugar’ scrubs, for the ultimate bathroom battle against cellulite and those dreaded dimply bits! Sugar is fantastic at exfoliating the skin and keeping it stimulated to achieve that sought after toned look. One of the most important things to do is to keep your skin gently stimulated and maintain a healthy circulation. By doing this you’ll encourage the elimination of toxins, ensure a healthy turnover of cells and stimulate muscle tone!
Sandy Santasugar scrub (Php 275) … a festive sugar scrub to help you eliminate all the overindulgence and toxins of the festive season. Use in the shower, work in circular motions all over the body (paying particular attention to problem areas such as thighs and bum) and allow the sand and sugar combination to buff, polish and banish winter skin, revealing the brighter and smoother layer underneath. Also contains uplifting orange, rosewood and sandalwood essential oils. Sandalwood can also act as an astringent, toning the skin and helping to improve its overall appearance. Vegan!

Why was it created?
Here is the ultimate Christmas Collection! Every year we create the collectors box showcasing (nearly*) all of the season’s specials in one grand chocolate box inspired gift! The design was inspired by the work of one of Hilary and Jiggly Paul’s favourite artists, Tord Boontje, and the massive scale of the box was inspired by Lucy and Becca’s trip to Chicago last Christmas – they were overwhelmed by the scale of all the gifts and wanted to create something like that for our customers!

Packed full of sweet goodness, Hilary and Paul came up with the name (not sure where they got the inspiration from?!) while Molly and Becca created the design. Ale helped Lucy work on the contents (although he’d rather his European colleagues didn’t know that!) – wow that’s a whole lotta team work!

Why was it created?
Sometimes inspiration travels in circles! A while ago, Lucy was looking through an old CTG catalogue where she saw ‘Kaleidosoaps’. She then spoke to Michelle about making a big Kaleidosoap. While Michelle was looking into this she found an amazing image of a Kaleidoscope which Lucy then showed to Rebecca, which in turn inspired this gift – funny how things work sometimes!
We wanted a hatbox that was fun and playful to celebrate Christmas – don’t get us wrong, we love the traditional look too – but with so many fun and playful products it seemed only right that we have a big gift to showcase them!

Why was it created?
This year the lovely Cathy Hookey (an illustrator who works in our Truro Shop) joined the gifts team in Design to work on some projects. Whilst she was working with us, Harry suggested that we have a fun and celebratory fiesta in a tin, in honour of some of our Mexican inspiration this Christmas. Cathy did wonders with the idea of a Mexican Christmas with this quirky take on traditional Santa. This jolly design combined with the jovial contents (there’s even Retro in here!) will not fail to make people happy as Santa!

Why was it created?
One of the many wonderful things with gifts is having lots of people’s involvement. When Chloe (of Regent Street fame) and Angela (queen of Christmas 2009-2011) came to lend their creative juices to gifts, Chloe suggested making a fairy Knot-Wrap. Between Lucy and Chloe they came up with a design and for a while, she was going to be a gift. However things change and we soon realised that our fairy friend was too good ‘knot’ to have as a Knot-Wrap for wrapping anything you fancy!

Marks & Spencer will donate up to Php 1,000,000 from its in-store Christmas campaign to help children suffering from severe acute malnutrition in Mindanao.
According to the latest statistics from the Food and Nutrition Research Institute, the prevalence of underweight children below five years old is at 20.2 per cent while 7.3 per cent of children below five have acute malnutrition. The situation in three regions (CagayanValley, MIMAROPA and ARMM) is even worse with severe malnutrition rates of 10-14 per cent. Malnutrition is caused by a number of factors related to health care, feeding practices, and poor water and sanitation facilities.
UNICEF is working with government and partners to combat severe acute malnutrition through a Community based management for Severe Acute Malnutrition (CMAM) programme, which has been running in Central Mindanao since December 2009. It was started in response to a nutritional assessment carried out in the area that showed 10% of children under 5 were suffering from acute malnutrition. CMAM was also the approach used in the emergency response to Tropical Storm Sendong in Cagayan de Oro and Iligan last 2011.
“Without any intervention, a child suffering from severe acute malnutrition has at least a 30% chance of dying. With this programme, which is based on UNICEF’s global experience with CMAM, and through the government, we are recording up to a 90% survival rate,’ said Dr. Paul Zambrano, UNICEF’s Nutrition Officer.
The programme involves community screening of children for acute malnutrition and a “therapeutic feeding” programme that is administered by community health workers and volunteers in health centres and hospitals. Mothers bring their children each week, on a specific day to be weighed and measured. Those children detected with severe acute malnutrition undergo an appetite test of a special peanut based RUTF (Ready-to-Use Therapeutic Food) to eat whilst in the clinic. As long as the child has appetite and is able to eat more than 70% of the RUTF, the mother is given enough RUTF packs for a week, and strict instructions on how to administer it. Any child that cannot eat or has other complications is treated in the hospital temporarily until he or she is able to resume the programme in health centres closer to their homes.
Mothers are also counselled on breastfeeding, adequate, safe and nutritious complementary foods as well as other best childcare practices including hand washing before preparing and feeding a child and after visiting the toilet. It is estimated that globally, undernutrition is an underlying condition in more than a third of deaths of children under five years. Severely malnourished children have a high likelihood of dying if they don’t receive appropriate treatment. The long-term effects of malnutrition are impaired learning and development and reduced income earning potential as adults. It is even estimated that up to 3% of a country’s gross domestic product (GDP) is lost due to undernutrition.
UNICEF continues to support the CMAM program in municipalities like Maguindanao and North Cotabato with plans to include the program into regular local government services in its partner municipalities (four in North Cotabato, one in Lanao Sur, and two in Maguindanao). UNICEF is also working with the DOH to finalize the national guidelines for CMAM, which will make this life-saving programme available to all severely malnourished children in the country.
Dr. Zambrano adds, “This generous donation from Marks & Spencer will go towards expanding the CMAM program to reach more children and families with high prevalence of malnutrition especially in Mindanao. We have achieved a lot, but there is still much to be done. With the support of businesses and individuals, we will continue to give more children in need the chance to live and grow normally, study, play, laugh, and experience the joys of childhood.”
