As the world celebrates Father’s Day, Romulo Café honors Gen. Carlos P. Romulo by introducing Cocido, a classic Spanish dish and an all-time favorite of the late general.
Father to four sons and grandfather to five girls and five boys, General Romulo dedicated his life to the pursuit of peace, envisioning a world where, in his words, “no child shall lie down in terror or waken to hunger but shall know himself as a being of unique value in a safer and kindlier world.”
For the whole month of June, Romulo Café pays tribute to all fathers with generous servings of Cocido. The hearty stew combines the flavors of beef shank, chicken, chorizo bilbao, chickpeas, pechay, cabbage, and saba (cooking bananas). This is simmered slowly in bulalo soup and served with the famous sauce of mashed saba and eggplant sauce.
Cocido was one of the General’s favorite dishes and was served at the Romulos’ “Kasiyahan” home for nearly all Sunday lunches. An order of Romulo Café’s Cocido is priced at P950.00 and is good for 5 to 6 people. Diners need to make a reservation for this special treat and order one day in advance.
Carlos Peña Romulo inherited his intense patriotism from his father, Gregorio, who fought in the revolution for Philippine independence against Spain and America. It’s no surprise that when he grew up, Romulo served as aide-de-camp to General Douglas MacArthur in World War II. A brilliant journalist, he wrote a series of articles about Japanese imperialism anticipating an attack on the United States. He won the Pulitzer Prize in Journalism for Distinguished Correspondence for his compelling reports.
He was a brigadier general in the US Army, receiving the Purple Heart and the Silver Star for his service during World War II. He later became the president of the United Nations, earning the distinction of being the first Asian to ever hold the post. He continued his dedicated work for the country, serving a total of eight Philippine presidents, including 17
years as Secretary of Foreign Affairs and 10 years as the Philippines’ ambassador to the United States.
Romulo Café intends to keep the memory and legacy of this distinguished officer and gentleman through the art of fine cooking and dining. Its cuisine includes original recipes used by Romulo’s first wife, Virginia Llamas Romulo. A skilled cook who personally managed the family kitchen in her early years of marriage, Virginia made sure that special Philippine recipes were always included in embassy functions that her husband hosted when he became a diplomat. She would prepare and cook the dishes herself, making sure that everything tasted perfect.

SAM PETERSON
Several years back, Sam shifted gears after 20-years managing businesses for the world’s largest industrial gas company, Linde. From this large multi-national, he joined the legion of self-storage pioneers in Asia when he took on the MD role at Steel Storage Asia (SSA) in Singapore. Here, he learned from the best in the industry; covering: design, real estate, financing, construction, operations, and marketing of Self-Storage. As his learnings grew, the allure of owner/operator was too great. So, four years ago he ventured into the Philippines on his own to create, from scratch, what is now the Philippines largest self-storage operator, Loc&Stor 24/7.
ANNA C. PETERSON
Anna’s background has been in marketing and merchandising. Her job stints have been in Leo Burnett and McCann Erickson in the Philippines, Toys R Us in the US and Hongkong and Habitat in Thailand. She also co-founded Impressions Art Studio in Singapore, before moving back to Manila after 25 years of living in various countries. She is happy to apply and test her many learnings and experiences at Loc&Stor 24/7, where she currently wears many hats – marketing, merchandising, operations, purchasing and a little bit of HR. “When you own your business, you have to be a jack of all trades and learn new roles as quickly as you can… and also learn when to hire 3rdparty consultants to help out where needed.” It has been a steep learning curve at times, but it’s been fun. The best part is when customers come to the facility and are pleasantly surprised at the level of cleanliness, service, and professionalism that we offer.
REINA C. LICAUCO
Reina studied Early Childhood Education and co-founded CHILD Pre-School fresh out of graduate school. Aside from child education she has always had an interest in art, dabbling in various mediums during her spare time or for relaxation. This interest in art led her to start Art Corner at PowerBooks where she held workshops for young kids using various mediums, thus combining both her passions. When her husband started SDIF, a college for low-income families, she took on a teacher role once again, this time teaching English to college level students. She never imagined herself to be in business, but she has been with Loc&Stor 24/7 since day one, learning the ins and outs of running a world-class self-storage facility. In line with her background in education, she trains the staff at Loc&Stor 24/7, and assists with operations, sales and HR. “Helping out in Loc&Stor pushed me out of my comfort zone — but it’s been worth it, seeing it grow.”
