I am so glad Jaime took it for a day – he is very independent so he just travels around the city – usually the bus or underground- but I prefer this 🙂

I saw the same thing in London!

Miya Shoji

By | Great Achievements, Homes and Interiors, Travel | 2 Comments

We were so happy to meet up with Raul, cousin of James!  He was also in the USA helping his daughter settle down for school.  We accompanied him to buy the mattress which Mia wanted.  So Raul came from Brooklyn and we met up.  Mia wanted a specific mattress – futon –  which was available only in Miya Shoji in New York!

[wp_youtube]XmO1kaNi3as[/wp_youtube]

The shop really sells furniture- Japanese chests, tatami and tables and Japanese screens.

miya-shoji-2.JPG

Happy to meet the owners- Father Hisao and son Zui.  Miya Shoji means temple carpenter so they make furniture using the old Japanese way without any nails!  They assemble the furniture without nails

miya-shoji-4.jpgmiyashoji-history.jpg

Petrified Wood Coffee table US$ 12,000

miya-shoji-8.JPG

If I am not mistaken this is a 300 year old stone – US$ 8,000 for this one!

miya-shoji-9.JPG

US$  80,000 for this beautiful table

More beautiful pieces of wood ready to be made into furniture

miya-shoji-7.jpgmiya-shoji-6.jpg

Futon is just an accessory they sell with the tatami.  Papa Raul happy to grant the request of Mia and make sure she sleeps comfortably 🙂

Uber

By | Technology, Travel | No Comments

We discovered this new way to travel within Manhattan.  Since we usually take taxi cabs, we noticed that it is getting harder to hire a cab in the city and each cab has different conditions – with aircon, without, friendly cab driver, unfriendly cab driver etc etc.   We tried UBER to see and compare.  First is to download the App in your phone

Click on it and it will show where you are and the UBER cars roaming near you.  You can even choose your type of car depending on your budget and requirements

We chose Black car and it says how long till the car will get to you approximately

Here is the actual test that we did and it even showed who your driver is and plate number

Here it is 🙂  It is a little more expensive than the yellow cabs but the car is much much better, the ride is safe and comfortable and more pleasant

Click below to go to their website:

I saw this in Facebook and wondering if it is the same service

Free Friday Nights at the MOMA

By | Arts and Culture, Travel | One Comment

While we were lining up across the street at Halal Guys, we saw this line which was much much longer circling the whole block!  So while James was lining up I decided to go and ask what the line was about

free-friday-nights-at-the-moma-1.JPG

Apparently it was for the Museum of Modern Art ( MOMA )
free-friday-nights-at-the-moma-2.jpg

It’s call the Uniqlo Free Friday Nights – You can enter the MOMA for free from 4pm to 8 pm on Fridays

Free entrance means long lines and very busy museum 🙂 We only went inside the lobby to check it out and decided not to enter anymore because there were a lot of people
