Gavel & Block

The team behind the esteemed Salcedo Auctions introduces its newest subsidiary, Gavel&Block with “Editions” featuring esteemed artists like BenCab, Mauro Malang Santos, Salvador Dali, and Pablo Picasso

From July 28, Friday to July 30, Saturday, a weekend market will bring together the worlds of art, design, and gastronomy. Gavel&Block, Salcedo Auctions’ new subsidiary, introduces a fresh, ‘out of the box’, and immersive event in collaboration with culinary group The Gourmand Market and creative event hub, Green Sun located at the Pasong Tamo Extension district.Gavel & Block (2)The Gourmand Market, Manila’s leading premium food market, will be offering a curated spread of fine food products, exciting local flavors and inventive plates at Green Sun to indulge even the most discriminating palates, providing an epicurean atmosphere, and indeed a full sensory experience as the inaugural Gavel & Block auction ‘Editions’ takes place on Saturday, July 29, 2017 at 2PM.

“Gavel&Block is for a progressive audience that appreciates art and design across all forms and media,” says Salcedo Auctions director Richie Lerma. “Gavel&Block is accessible because we want to bring the experience of auctions to a wider audience, educating and developing aesthetic sensibilities at the same time.”

“Accessibility also means being able to reach diverse individuals at their nodes of interest,” Lerma continues. “Food is a great reason to go out, socialize, and have a sensory experience that can be shared. So is the viewing of art; so I thought that gastronomy and visual art naturally complement one another – thus the collaboration with The Gourmand Market.”

For its debut sale entitled ‘Editions’, Gavel&Block by Salcedo Auctions will feature fine prints, ceramics, and sculptures by local and international masters. Among the artists featured are Mauro Malang Santos, National Artists Ang Kiukok, BenCab, and the world-renowned surrealist Salvador Dali.

Gavel & Block (1)

Mauro Malang Santos and Ang Kiukok utilize a stencil-based technique to create colorful serigraphs. Pigments are applied to paper by pressing paint using a squeegee on top of a silk screen. This creates blocks of color that can be layered on top of each other.

BenCab, on the other hand, creates impressive graphic works by drawing an image onto a metal plate. After the metal is treated with a thin film of wax, the artist engraves the image onto the plate with a sharp, chisel-like tool called a burin to expose the plate underneath. After the image is finished, the metal is dipped in acid that burns through the exposed metal, leaving indentations where the image was drawn. The plate is then cleaned to remove the layer of wax, and ink or paint is smoothed over the plate, settling into the grooves. After cleaning with a washcloth to remove the excess paint, the image is placed under a damp piece of paper before running through a press. In BenCab’s Edsa Event, etching allows him to capture the intricate drapes he often depicts in his art.

Salvador Dali’s Les Entre-Plats Sodomisés involved drawing a mirror image of the artwork onto stone or metal using a medium that contains grease (these include crayons, pencils, or a black liquid specific to lithography called a tusche). Once the image is done, the entire surface is treated with gum arabic and nitric acid in order for the non-greasy areas to absorb water and the greasy areas to absorb oil. Next, a roller sponge dipped in oil-based ink is rolled over the surface with the color only sticking to the original drawing. The plate is then placed over a piece of paper and run through a press to produce editions of the image. Different plates are required for different colors

“Though auctions may seem intimidating at first, Gavel&Block promises to change that, providing a unique, exciting experience that everyone can enjoy.” A weeklong preview of  ‘Editions’ will also be held at Three Salcedo Place, 121 Tordesillas St., Salcedo Village, Makati City, from Thursday, 20 July to Wednesday, 26 July and a catalogue of the 77 pieces going under Gavel & Block is available for download on salcedoautions.com

From July 28, Friday to July 30, Saturday, the first-of-its-kind ‘Editions’ food, art, and auction festival will be held at The Gourmand Market @ The Axon, Green Sun, 2318 Pasong Tamo Ext, Makati City. The event will feature the debut sale of Gavel&Block by Salcedo Auctions on Saturday, July 29 at 2pm. With a focus on the contemporary market, the ‘Editions’ auction will offer original fine prints, ceramics, and sculptures by local and international masters. Printmaking demonstrations by the renowned artist Fil Delacruz will also be held on Friday, July 28 at 6pm and on Sunday, July 30 at 4pm

Johannes Huebl and Friends Enjoy The Sunny Side of Life In A New Content Series Celebrating The Anniversary Of A Legendary Ultra-Thin Watch

As part of the Altiplano’s 60th anniversary celebrations, Piaget brings the timeless and effortless elegance of this watch making icon to Miami with a series of four videos starring Johannes Huebl. Joined by his friends, models Jislain Duval, David Miller and Ryan Krause, Piaget (1)the photographer and men’s style icon takes in the energy and fun of this sunny destination accompanied by the new editions of the legendary watch. Released just in time for this milestone anniversary, these marvels of ultra-thin watch Piaget (3)making revisits the purist aesthetics and distinctive design vocabulary of Altiplano with refreshing new colours and impeccable new movements.

The mood and theme of the short films are inspired by Piaget’s new platform – Sunny Side of Life – an invitation to live life to the fullest under the warmth of the sun and enjoy a lifestyle punctuated by radiant moments. Johannes and his companions embrace this invitation and the Miami lifestyle, whether relaxing poolside under the bright sunshine, sitting on a terrace among friends, strolling beachside or enjoying sunset cocktails on a rooftop overlooking the city. It’s this exhilarating and sophisticated atmosphere infused with bright sunshine that reflects perfectly the Piaget Society’s lifestyle.Piaget (2) From dawn until dusk, the different moments of the day experienced by the young men highlight the versatility of Altiplano, a defining quality of a watch that has become such an enduring statement of elegance since 1957. With its extreme thinness, it feels like a second skin effortlessly adapting to the lifestyle of the individual who wears it. As worn by Huebl, it becomes a sophisticated companion to a blazer and linen shirt for a cocktail party or a smart complement to a long-sleeved tee for a casual poolside moment.

As a friend of Piaget, it is not the first time that Johannes Huebl has collaborated creatively with the maison. Behind the camera, the fashion photographer shot his wife Olivia Palermo for two Possession campaigns.

Throughout 2017, Piaget is celebrating 60 years since its ultra-thin icon made its debut with the release of new limited editions. To discover more, visit www.piaget.com

A collection that features High Jewellery, jewellery watches and Art & Excellence is always a journey to the frontiers of influences and desires that nurture a vision of materials, motifs and lights. This exploration often creates the most lingering emotions, even if they were to last only one day… Sunlight Journey is therefore an escapade punctuated by the path of the sun and the moods it creates, alternating between gentle meanderings, joyful effervescenceanddazzling radiance.

Piaget’s newest collection draws inspiration from the scenic beauty of the Amalfi Coast.A land of fire, volcanoes, and azure blue seas; a land bathed in light, a land where the natural elements unitewith strength and passion. Aland rich in culture and artistic expressions; a land of exchanges and sharing, where life itself is regarded as an intense and refined work of art, echoing the ‘art of living’ locations so greatly prized by the Piaget Society.

Each time of day produces its own light and its distinctive vibe, in which jewellery and watchmaking creations bloom in dazzling colours thanks to the use of exceptional gems such as blue sapphires and yellow diamonds. A journey expressed through a unique pathto the heart of many skills cultivated by the Maison Piaget.

Secrets of Dawn

Just after dawn, when sea and sky appear to merge in misty shades of grey, beige and pink, a lucky few stroll along the beach in search of new impressions and are treated to the first bursts of sunlight dappling the surface of water, creating a magical sparkle. The initial stopover of this escape to Mediterranean lands is clothed in pink gold and adorned with white opals and Paraiba tourmalines. Two bathers leave the calm waters and begin to look for treasures buriedin the sand, delighting in the pleasure of losing any notion of time. Secretcuff-watches (G0A42219) play hide and seek, revealing the time only to those who take the time to grasp their mysteries. A creative signature of the Maison Piaget for several decades.

Piaget (2)Then the dawn breaks and gradually reveals the beauty of the world. Fascinating watches, featuring dials adorned with variously shaded white opals form sceneries composed of billowing clouds and foam thatinspire dreams and fantasy (G0A42088-188-288). Certain timepieces have captured these images in memory of a summer stroll, by using original materials such as eggshell mosaic (G0A42199) for their dial decoration.

Piaget (3)Midday Festival

High in the sky, the sun illuminates a land of contrasts and thrilling visual effects. The rocks appear carved like rough gems, tracing a random path along the cliffs, beyond which extend infinite stretches of sky and sea. The gaze is carried away by a symphony of sapphire and lapis lazuli blues and emerald greens. A convertible car has just stopped by the roadside to enable a couple in love with the South to step out and enjoy the view across the Mediterranean from a stone balcony.

Each of the elements composing this natural setting, lit up by the sun, delivers a series of tableaus featuring a flamboyant aesthetic. This pair of earrings (G38N2800) echoes the geography of distant islands, lost in a sea of black opal. They are an open invitation to plunge into the heart of summer. A sautoir necklace sparkles with blue marquise-cut gems, diamonds and feathers, arranged around an exceptional 45.99-carat* blue star sapphire (G37N2000). A noon swimmer glides gracefully through the water with this marvellous creation encircling her neck.Reclining on a deck chair, a young woman plays with a necklace sparkling with an oval-cut Ceylon sapphire (G37N2300). Mimicking the shimmer of the sun across the surface of the water thanks to its shower of diamonds, it beckons her to the shoreline.

Piaget (4)Beach games continue despite the increasing heat. Bursts of laughter can be heard. Mosaic effects magnify the splendidly varied shades of the sea: gems reproduce the movement of a wave rippling over a watch, a one-of-a-kind creation embracing the wrist with its asymmetrical charm (G0A42250). A necklace of sapphires, black opals and diamonds crowned by a 20.14-carat* emerald-cut blue sapphire shines with unique radiance like waves lapping against the shore (G37N3500). The young woman wearing it revels in its refreshing look and feel on her skinPiaget (1)A brief afternoon interlude to escape from the burning sun. Bodies stretched out in the shade lose track of time. And yet this unique cuff-watch (G0A42218) in white gold and diamonds, featuring a white mother-of-pearl dial as well as an 8.9-carat* black opal, serves as a vivid reminder that the day is not over yet…

Nightfall Celebration

The heat of the afternoon sun gradually subsides. Gardens takeon vibrant colours and exude fragrant scents. Women shine in flowing dresses painted with flowers. Lavish pink bougainvilleaencircles the dial, meticulously crafted of micro-mosaic, taking on an intense and luminous fuchsia pink hue (G0A42194). The sky is clothed in orange, pink and gold and the sun glows in all its majesty one last time before dipping beneath the horizon, like this cuff-watch adorned with a purplish pink spinel. It radiates colourful beams of pink sapphires and red spinels (G36M5600).

Piaget (5)This flaming sky spells the start of a festive evening, where everything will be lived with the greatest intensity. Like an explosion of joy causing rubies and diamonds to sparkle on elegant décolletages, with necklaces featuring Piaget’s beloved sunbeam motifs (G37N4200). Luminously resistant to nightfall, a 6.63-carat* cushion-shape yellow diamond glows with spectacular radiance in the company of red spinels, yellow and white diamonds (G37N1700). And sometimes, away from prying eyes, in the darkness well suited to confidential whispers, a ring will reveal its own secret: skilfully crafted feather marquetry embellished with purple sapphires, red spinels and diamonds (G34HR400), representing yet another treasure amid a world of pure beauty in the midst of summer.Piaget (6)This infinitely sun-kissed day draws to a close, as the impression of having accomplished a long and beautiful journey already nurtures new dreams of treasures to come.

Christiania

By | Regent Seven Seas Explorer | No Comments

Interesting place – a must visit in Copenhagen.

Freetown Christiania is a green and car-free neighbourhood in Copenhagen, best known for its autonomous inhabitants’ different way of life. It was established in 1971 by a group of hippies who occupied some abandoned military barracks on the site and developed their own set of society rules, completely independent of the Danish government.
Christiania existed under special conditions for 40 years with constant conflicts and clashes between the local Christianites and the Danish state. After many years of uncertainty about the future of Christiania, an agreement was entered in 2011, which meant that on 1 July 2012, a foundation, the Foundation Freetown Christiania, was founded. The foundation now owns the entire part of Christiania located outside the protected ramparts and leases buildings and land on the ramparts, which are still owned by the state. Part of the money is raised by selling the symbolic Christiania shares.
Freetown Christiania is a mix of homemade houses, workshops, art galleries, music venues, cheap and organic eateries, and beautiful nature. It is still a society within a society, for an example you cannot buy a house in Christiania. You have to apply for it, and if successful, it is given to you. The area is open to the public – even with guided tours, run by the local Christianites.
For your own safety, visitors are advised not to film nor photograph in Christiania, especially not in the area in and around Pusher Street, mainly due to the hash dealing, which is illegal in Denmark. At the entrance you will find signs indicating ‘do’s and don’ts’ in the area. We advice you to take them seriously and follow them for your own safety. ( VisitCopenhagen.com) #H2HSSExplorer2017 #H2HCopenhagenChristiania (1)  You’re not allowed to take photos in Christiania so I only took the walls haha!! What is your greatest wish? Share your dreams and participate in the artist Yoko Ono’s installation Wish Tree Garden. The installation has been created specifically for Copenhagen Contemporary and will be a permanent feature of the harbour area in front of the halls until December 2017.

Since 1996, Yoko Ono has been creating the artwork Wish Tree, which consists of one or more trees installed all around the world. The work is site-specific; that is, each tree species is chosen for its importance to the location, and when possible, is indigenous to the place and its climate, in collaboration with Ono. On a slip of paper, a so-called ‘wish tag’, anyone can write a wish and hang it on the branches of the trees. In Wish Tree Garden at Papirøen, trees from the Danish and Asian landscape grow on the Copenhagen quayside. Lilac, Reed Gråsten apple, Cornelian cherry dogwood, magnolia and tibetan cherry tree all create the impression of a garden you can walk in and see blossoming, changing colour and losing the leaves in the course of the changing seasons. The slips of paper on the branches of the trees flutter in the wind, and all the individual wishes give the garden a poetic dimension.

All the wishes are regularly collected and when the exhibition ends they will be sent to Yoko Ono. Eventually, wishes from all over the world will be gathered together in Ono’s Imagine Peace Tower on the island of Viðey in Kollafjörður Bay, Iceland: an art installation that consists of a tall column of light dedicated to Ono’s late husband, John Lennon. The wishes from CC will join millions of others that have already been collected since 1996 from other places in the world, and will be placed at the Peace Tower. Nyhavn

By | Regent Seven Seas Explorer | No Comments

I see this is many photos of friends who visit Copenhagen so I made sure we went here 🙂   Nyhavn (4)Nyhavn was originally a busy commercial port where ships from all over the world would dock. The area was packed with sailors, ladies of pleasure, pubs and alehouses.

Today the beautiful old houses have been renovated and classy restaurants dominate the old port. Nyhavn is filled with people enjoying the relaxed atmosphere by the canal, jazz music and great food.
No. 9, Nyhavn, is the oldest house in the area dating back to 1681. The design of the house has not been altered since that time.
Many of the houses lining the quays of Nyhavn have been the homes of prominent artists.

Hans Christian Andersen’s Nyhavn

The famous Danish fairytale writer, Hans Christian Andersen, used to live in no. 20. This is where he wrote the fairy-tales ‘The Tinderbox’, ‘Little Claus and Big Claus’, and ‘The Princess and the Pea’. He also lived twenty years in no. 67 and two years in no. 18.
Christmas by the canal
During Christmas, Nyhavn sets the perfectly Christmas-lit setting for your holiday in Copenhagen. The cafés and restaurants offer Danish Christmas delicacies and the annual Christmas market fills the cobbled street with decorated stalls. A classic Christmas experience. On one side is this building which is the Kunsthal Charlottenborg which is an Art space.  There is a new installation which is til October 2017.

 AI WEIWEI: SOLEIL LEVANT
Installation on the facade towards Nyhavn
20 jun – 1 oct 2017
The opening of Ai Weiwei’s (b. 1957 in Beijing, China) new installation, produced specifically for Kunsthal Charlottenborg @kunsthalcharlottenborg and Copenhagen, will take place on United Nations International Refugee Day (June 20 2017). Named Soleil Levant, the installation barricades the windows of Kunsthal Charlottenborg with more than 3500 salvaged life jackets collected from refugees arriving at the Greek Island of Lesbos.

Focus on the humanitarian crisis
With this installation, Ai Weiwei hopes to bring focus to the refugee crisis currently taking place across Europe. According to UNHCR, 1,377,349 individuals arrived in Europe via sea in 2015 and 2016. In the same period, over 8000 individuals have died or disappeared attempting this journey. It is the wide-spread humanitarian crisis, which Ai Weiwei aims to bring focus on.

The name of the work stems from Claude Monet’s painting Impression, Soleil Levant from 1872, which depicts the harbour in Le Havre at the end of the 1870-71 Franco-Prussian war. Whereas Monet’s landscape painting captures the political and social reality of its time with its cranes, steamboats and industrialisation, Ai Weiwei’s Soleil Levant draws attention to the political and social reality of today through refugee lifejackets.

World-renowned artist and activist
Ai Weiwei is one of the most respected living artists in the world today. His work – across sculpture, architecture, installations, music, photography and film – always challenge and encourage critical debate. He has previously exhibited at ARoS, Louisiana and Arken in Denmark, where his works are also part of the museums’ permanent collections.

In 2011, Ai Weiwei was detained in China for 81 days without charges and had his passport confiscated. He did not get his passport back from the government until 2015. Since relocating to Berlin following the return of his passport, many of the artist’s latest works focus on the refugee crisis of present-day Europe.
