October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month. Every year I celebrate this by promoting pink advocacies and supporting the different causes to prevent breast cancer which is very rampant all over the world. This year I have very exciting news for everyone! Two months ago, A good friend of mine has just opened the first Early detection of breast and cervical cancer clinic in the Philippines at LivLite Center. Newton Mapua and his Canadian business partner Martin Kozak of Nuvotek are the distributors of this technology which is a joint Russian-Canadian collaboration. I went to visit the clinic and had myself screened. meik newton mapua and martin kozak nuvotek

It is the most advanced technology in early detection of breast and cervical cancer. There are many benefits of this new technology:

1.) Usually a woman has a mammogram at the age of 40, but with this new technology, any young woman can have herself screened. I encourage all the young women out there to have yourselves screened. There is no harm to check your breasts now. And what better time to screen than at an early age so that if there are high risks of cancer in the woman’s breast of having breast cancer, the concerns can be addressed already at an early age or stage. Adjustments in lifestyle can be done, maybe medication. The most important thing is to detect it early and not wait till you are 40 years old and maybe if there is cancer it might be at a late stage already and it will be too late.
2.) Aside from being able to do it at any age, you can do it at any stage of your menstrual cycle.
3.) It’s even safe for women with implants or pacemakers.
4.) The procedure is painless. There is a bit of pressure when Meik is placed on top of the breast, but it is not painful and does not press as hard as a mammogram.
5.) They use a small machine called MEIK. It is so small that it is portable and you can bring it anywhere. If you want to have your whole company screened, the machine can be brought to the office. You can even have a health and wellness party with your girlfriends
6.) There is no radiation. Doing a mammogram is like having one thousand X-rays so you can imagine how strong the radiation is.
7.) The procedure is quick and easy. You can even get your results right after the procedure and an OB Gynecologist, Dr. Iya, will interpret the results for you so you can understand your breasts and understand what was seen in the screening. It is important that an appointment is made if you want the same day results with the doctor, there will be an additional cost but it is worth itDra Iya nuvotek meik breast cancer detection Every tissue in the body has its own unique electrical signal. By mapping out the organ, MEIK can generate a digital image of that organ, in this case the breast which is a complex organ. We are fortunate that cancer stands out like a beacon having a higher electical signature than normal cells 10 to 60x higher. And that’s what the MEIK detects. What makes MEIK very accurate is that it is not totally dependent on the visual skill of the interpreter to have to identify the cancer, it is computer aided analysis where the computer assists the interpreter and also offers quantitative analysis for cross checking purposes. The technology is very sophisticated as there are many other functions of MEIK such as microclassifications of the findings, ability to classify if the subject is in the high risk group of developing breast cancer, ability of classifying a cancer as benign or malignant etc. But, as with other modalities, there are possibilities of errors too, but the advantage of MEIK is that since there is no pain or radiation, it can be repeated many times or used for monitoring. Do know that though is that MEIK is designed as a mass screening device to complement the standard radiation based mammography because that is still the gold standard. When MEIK detects a finding, the subject is then referred to the standard mammograohy. MEIK is targeting the healthy population to catch cancer very early on to allow the subject more options on treatment and a better chance to fight the cancer and win the battle.

Congratulations Jaime and Chris Daez on the launch of Halal Guys.

The Halal Guys Press Launch - Evite_

The wait is over. Filipino fans have every reason to celebrate because the iconic American-Halal street food franchise has arrived in Manila.

Anyone who has been to the Big Apple would agree that the experience of traveling to New York is never complete without a visit to the world famous food cart. There’s nothing like marveling at the magnanimity of New York’s local scene while enjoying a hot platter of the delicious halal meat generously covered in their inimitable sauces. No matter the weather, the food cart gathers foodies from all over, who are more than willing to wait in line for the exotic yet mysteriously comforting fare. But there’s no need to take a trip to New York’s 53rd and 6th any time soon, because The Halal Guys are set to open their first international location here in the Philippines, with their first store at 5L, Mega Food Hall, SM Megamall.

Heart2Heart is so excited to see the Halal guys !! The guys behind the famous food truck in New York City.
The Halal Guys started in 1990, when founding partners, Muhammed Abouelenein, Ahmed Elsaka and Abdelbaset Elsayed, opened a hotdog cart on West 53rd and 6th avenue. Due to the demand for quick and affordable Halal street food, specifically from the Muslim cab drivers, they decided to convert their cart into the city’s first Halal Street Food cart. Since then, the Halal Guys has steadily become the largest and most beloved American halal street food concept in the world.
Going Global
Currently, there are 5 food carts and 2 brick-and-mortar restaurants in New York. With the support of franchising giant, Fransmart, the brand is expanding across the US and around the world. The first stores that opened outside of New York, are Chicago and Costa Mesa, California. Plans are underway to open stores in Houston Texas, Philadelphia and Washington DC, among others. The Halal Guys, which has been dubbed as the next big thing in fast, casual dining, is also expanding globally, with the Philippines as its first international location. Other international franchise locations that are in the pipeline, include Malaysia, South Korea and Toronto.

I was so touched listening to the Halal Guys and Jaime when they spoke, truly a dream come true! “Whenever I’m in New York, I make it a point to eat at The Halal Guys. I’m a huge fan,” Jaime Daez, the man responsible for bringing in the world-famous food cart shares enthusiastically. Their food tastes great! I don’t know of any other restaurant in New York that offers that kind of value for money.” “According to Yelp, The Halal Guys is the highest rated restaurant in New York. I am very excited to bring that same experience to Manila.” Manila can anticipate a complete experience of the wildly popular menu. The very same menu offered in the famous New York food carts and brick-and-mortar shops, and the same menu that made The Halal Guys famous worldwide. This includes everything from the rice platters (chicken, gyro, combos) to sandwiches (chicken, gyro, combos); from falafels down to their iconic white sauce and hot sauce. Manila can anticipate a complete experience of the wildly popular menu. Mission Church of Carmel

This photo is so miraculous! How the clouds look like rays beaming from the Carmel Mission. Founded June 3, 1770. It stands today as a monument to the great “Missionary of the Cross” who left his home and the comforts of a conventional life to come to our Western wilderness to preach the Gospel of Christ and to teach California’s Native Americans. The Blessed Junipero Serra Of the order of Franciscan friars. He was canonized by Pope Francis during his visit to the USA  Mission Church of Carmel (2)

Mission Ranch

By | Travel | No Comments

“The historic Mission Ranch on 22 acres with spectacular views of Point Lobos, Carmel River Beach and the Pacific Ocean. Once one of the first dairies in California, the rich history of this 1800’s ranch was preserved and restored by former Carmel Mayor, Clint Eastwood. A longtime Carmel resident, Clint Eastwood rescued this landmark resort from condo developers, and renovated the entire property to provide a unique resort experience. The Inn now consists of 31 hotel rooms located within ten buildings on the property. While dining at the restaurant, known for its American Cuisine and Piano Bar, you can watch the sheep graze in the meadow. Located just 9 blocks south of downtown Carmel and 8 blocks from Carmel Beach, the views and quiet location make the Ranch a special place for romantic getaways, weddings, corporate dinners or family vacations. The property is also the home of the Mission Ranch Tennis and Fitness Club which guests are welcome to enjoy during their stay.” ( http://www.missionranchcarmel.com)

17-Mile Drive

By | Travel | No Comments

Since we were already on the 17 Mile Drive – we drove it.  Our guide was the red lines on the road. The 17-Mile Drive is a scenic road through Pebble Beach and Pacific Grove on the Monterey Peninsula in California, much of which hugs the Pacific coastline and passes famous golf courses, mansions and scenic attractions, including the Lone Cypress, Bird Rock and the 5,300-acre Del Monte Forest of Monterey Cypress trees.

The drive serves as the main road through the gated community of Pebble Beach. Inside this community, nonresidents have to pay a toll to use the road. Like the community, the majority of 17-Mile Drive is owned and operated by the Pebble Beach Corporation. The 17-Mile Drive is a 17-mile (27 km)-long scenic loop having four primary entrances – the main highway entrance at California State Route 1, and entrances in Carmel and Pacific Grove. ( Wikipedia)

The Lone Cypress Tree in the 17 Mile Drive is the highlight of the drive. It is the most photographed tree!

Standing on a granite hillside off California’s scenic 17-mile drive in Pebble Beach, the Lone Cypress is a western icon, and has been called one of the most photographed trees in North America. The tree is located between Cypress Point Golf Course and the Pebble Beach Golf Links, two of world’s most well known golf courses. Possibly as old as 250 years, the cypress has been scarred by fire and held in place with cables for 65 years.

The Monterey Cypress grows naturally only in Pebble Beach and Point Lobos

A drawing of the tree was registered as Pebble Beach Company’s trademark in 1919. The company, said the trademark protected not only the logo but also the tree itself ( Wikipedia)
