Message from my sister in law Tina Banzhaf de Jesus, Vice President of the Intl Wine & Food Society.
This is their annual event that keeps growing every year with last year’s 250 attendees.
“We are currently organizing the 2017 Annual International Wine And Food Society Manila Ladies Branch Wine Crawl which will be on Sat, Feb. 18 at the Green Sun Arts Center on Pasong Tamo extension. Doors open at 3:30pm but you can come in anytime until 8pm. It’s a great way to discover new wines & perhaps learn about different types and styles of wine. We invited 12 merchants & select only 6 wines for them to feature. Wines are all served in tasting portions so it’s always a fun way to spend a Saturday afternoon/evening especially with a group of friends. The early bird rate is P1,750 and includes P700 credit (for buying or tasting the wines), pica-pica, souvenirs and a wine guide for all the featured wines. The wines can be purchased at special discounts (20%) for all participants on the day of the event only. Please let me know if you’re interested to join. Text at 0917-830-2005. It’s our 7th year hosting the Wine Crawl and it has surely grown from its humble beginnings” #InternationalWineandFoodSociety #Winecrawl #H2HWines

What a fulfilling afternoon with Tinette!

For 4 hours we listened to what happened to her the past 20 years we were not in touch.

We laughed, we were in awe and we even cried. From a very low point in her life which almost made her take her life to a total transformation where she gives hope and she gives life not only to herself but to her family, friends and to her church. She has 3 beautiful children who she home schooled and soon to adopt 3 orphaned siblings from Ukraine and go through home schooling all over again! wow! It’s not easy!
She will not only have to take care of 3 but will have to raise 3 more. And she says it’s all God’s plan and she just follows and listens to Him.
She inspires me to have a close relationship with God and leave everything to Him and trust in Him. She says that Satan is very much present and that it’s your choice to pick between Satan and God. I’m so blessed to be surrounded by people who share their life so that I can be closer to God. I’m blessed that I have reconnected with Tinette and I’m very sure today was not by chance but God’s plan. She’s Christian and Eds @manayesg and I are Catholic – but when she speaks about God we are in sync ? We are hoping she will document her life into a movie so more people can witness the beautiful story ? She tells her story so well I wish everyone could hear her. Meantime she continues to share and make a difference in the lives she has touched and I’m one of them. Thank you Tinette and Thank you God who is always there – it’s really up to us to reach out to Him? #h2hpeople #h2hquotes #H2HG?D
I dropped her off after lunch and got to meet her daughter who is so pretty and looks just like Mom!

To complement the fair, Art Fair Philippines launches 10 Days of Art, from February 9 to 19, a series of events around the financial district that will involve galleries, museums, bars, restaurants, and retail establishments. The idea is for the celebration of art to spread beyond the venue of the fair in the days leading up to its opening.
Highlighting the public art installations around the city is the Asian premiere of Street, by British-born painter and filmmaker James Nares. The film, which has been shown at New York’s Metropolitan Museum of Art, will play at a specially installed video screen in Ayala Triangle Gardens, at the heart of the central business district, in the evenings of February 14 to 19. The one-hour video captures passers-by in the streets of New York in slow motion, as if they had been caught in a dream.

Now in its 5th edition, Art Fair Philippines 2017 prides itself as the premium art destination for modern and contemporary Philippine art in the world.
Slated for February 16 – 19, 2017, Art Fair Philippines 2017 promises to showcase the best in Philippine modern and contemporary art at The Link carpark, located in Ayala Center Makati. In 2017, an additional floor, the open-air Roof Deck, has been added to accommodate the thousands of people who increasingly come visit the fair since its inception (from 6,000 visitors in 2013 to 22,000 in 2016).
The overall exhibition design of Art Fair Philippines 2017 is a project of Leandro V. Locsin and Partners, curators of the Philippine Pavilion in the 15th Venice Architecture Biennale.
Ingrained in the Art Fair Philippines 2017’s mission is the development of audiences for contemporary art. As part of its programs, the ART FAIR PH/TALKS and ART FAIR PH/TOURS were created in partnership with the Ateneo Art Gallery and Museum Foundation of the Philippines.
Featuring three talks a day, ART FAIR PH/TALKS will include Canadian writer and sociologist of culture Dr. Sarah Thornton, former contemporary art chief correspondent for The Economist and author of several art world bestsellers such as Seven Days in the Art World and 33 Artists in 3 Acts. Also, Filipino historian, academic and journalist Prof. Ambeth R. Ocampo will talk on the solo exhibition he curated at the Ateneo Art Gallery of works by significant modern artist Arturo Luz, Philippine National Artist for the Visual Arts. Professor Tony Godfrey, teacher, writer, and curator, will offer an exchange on often asked questions about contemporary art as he discusses what “masterpiece” or being a great artist may mean today.
ART FAIR PH/TOURS will continue to propose guided tours of relevant museums around Metro Manila.
ART FAIR PH/PROJECTS are new commissions in form of interactive and/or thought-provoking installations around The Link by internationally established Filipino visual artists. On the 6th floor, an installation by Jose Tence Ruiz, one of the artists who represented the Philippines at the Venice Biennale in 2015, takes center stage with a socio-realist commentary on the country’s current political issues. Other artists commissioned for the 2017 line-up are Agnes Arellano, Elmer Borlongan, Patricia Perez Eustaquio, Emmanuel Garibay, Dex Fernandez, Mark Justiniani, Maria Jeona Zoleta, and the WSK group of sound artists. The 2017 recipient of the Karen H. Montinola Selection, a private grant created in homage to art patron Karen Hernandez.
Montinola with Art Fair Philippines in 2014, is interdisciplinary and ceramic artist Mark Valenzuela.
On loan from the Julius Baer art collection is the video Telephones by award-winning Swiss and American artist, Christian Marclay. In this 1995 piece, he spliced scenes from over 100 classic films to put together a montage that features ringing phones and famous Hollywood names picking up calls in dramatic sequence.
The Philippines’ leading galleries, will be joined by a wider roster of galleries from Southeast Asia, Japan, Hong Kong and Taiwan to showcase curated exhibitions from local and foreign visual artists.
The 46 galleries participating in Art Fair Philippines 2017 are: 1335 Mabini, Altro Mondo Arté Contemporanea, Archivo 1984, ARNDT, Art Cube Gallery, Artinformal, ART LAB, Art Underground, Art Verite’, Artesan Gallery + Studio, Avellana Art Gallery, Blanc, Boston Art Gallery, CANVAS, Edouard Malingue Gallery, Finale Art File, Gajah Gallery, Galería Cayón, Galerie Anna, Galerie Michael Janssen, Galerie Stephanie, Galleria Duemila, Gallery Kogure, Gallery Orange, J Studio, Kaida Contemporary, Asian Cultural Council/Leon Gallery, MO_Space, Nunu Fine Art, Paseo Art Gallery, Pinto Art Gallery, ROH Projects, Salcedo Private View, Secret Fresh, Silverlens, TAKSU, The Crucible Gallery, The Drawing Room, Tin-aw Gallery, Underground Gallery, Vinyl on Vinyl, West Gallery, XuArtspace, Yavuz Gallery, Ysobel Art Gallery, and YOD Gallery.

To complement the fair, Art Fair Philippines launches 10 Days of Art, from February 9 to 19, a series of events around Makati and BGC that will involve galleries, museum, bars, restaurants, and retail establishments. The idea is for the celebration of art to spread beyond the venue of the fair in the days leading up to its opening.

Ferran Barenblit, Director, Museu d’Art Contemporani de Barcelon (MACBA)
Argentina-born curator talks about the role of the museum and contemporary art in fostering critical thinking and serving as a platform for open discussion in a multi-cultural city like Barcelona.
The practice of British-born, New York based artist James Nares spans the breadth of painting to video linked by an enduring concern for capturing rhythm, time and movement. Featured in this year’s art fair is his video installation Street, which is a dreamlike moving image that captures the activity on an ordinary street in Brooklyn. The video installation will be at Ayala Tower One and Exchange Plaza in front of Ayala Triangle Gardens.
Much material about art can be accessed online and in magazines, but books focused on a particular artist, movement or art scene provide depth and insight that single articles cannot. The thought and consideration given to every photograph, every perspective and the amount of time and energy the authors, editors and publishers expend on art books allow readers to immerse themselves in a subject. The talk features a conversation between Ringo Bunoan (visual artist, curator, co-founder artbooks.ph, editor, Roberto Chabet) and Eva McGovern (curator, and managing editor of No Chaos No Party: 28 Artists in Metro Manila)
Renowned writer and art sociologist Dr. Sarah Thornton will share her insights into the globalised art world, her observations on meaningful artistic practice today, and why art still matters. After decades studying the art ecology—including spending time with hundreds of artists with international careers—she will talk about her research and her books with art critic and Asia Art Archive head of development Alexandra A Seno. Dr Thornton is the author of international bestsellers “Seven Days in the Art World” and “33 Artists in Three Acts.”
Philippine National Artist for Visual Arts Arturo Luz (b.1926) has had an artistic career spanning more than half a century. Named National Artist in 1997, he began his career with figurative works then went on to explore other modes of abstraction and stylized figuration in paintings, sculpture, photographs and collages. Ocampo, curator of the exhibition currently at the Ateneo Art Gallery luz@90 will look at the practice of this giant in Philippine art.
In the 1990s, Elmer Borlongan, Emmanuel Garibay and Mark Justiniani were part of several artist collectives : ABAY (Artista ng Bayan), Salingpusa and Sanggawa. These groups explored the collaborative process in art making and their subjects reflected the political and social conditions of the times. Since then they have gone on to forge very successful individual careers but 25 years later, they have come together again to do a project for Art Fair Philippines. This talk will give audiences an insight into past and current practices.
Sculptor Agnes Arellano and multi-media artist Jose Tence Ruiz talk about their work, their process and their vision including their projects for Art Fair Philippines.
Tony Godfrey on Masterpieces in Contemporary Art
Has anyone see a masterpiece of contemporary art? Are there any masterpieces of contemporary art? In this country or this region – or the whole world? Is there an artist living in our country, region or nation today that we can call great, just as we say Michelangelo, Rembrandt, van Gogh or Matisse are “great”? How good are the art and artists of our time? Will they be remembered in the future? Professor Godfrey will discuss what “masterpiece” or being a great artist may mean today. He will look at works both made globally and in South-east Asia.
Art in the Community
This panel turns its attention to art beyond galleries and museums and looks at projects that purposefully insert themselves into the physical spaces communities, confronting audiences with art in public places. The panel features visual artist and Project Space Pilipinas founder Leslie de Chavez; visual artist and curator of 98B COLLABoratory Marika Constantino; and urban planner and MMDA Assistant General Manager for Operations Julia Nebrija
Focus on the Visayas: VIVA ExCon
Established in 1990 by artists from Negros, The Visayan Islands Visual Arts Exhibit Conference (VIVA ExCon) is the is the largest and longest running arts festival in the country. Charlie Co one of its founders will talk about its origins and history while Rock Drilon, VivaExCon 2016 Director will focus on the recently concluded Biennial. It is a chance to get a glimpse of the vibrant art world outside of Manila hopefully expanding audiences understanding of Philippine contemporary art beyond the country’s capital.
Philippine Art and Biennales
How is Philippine art presented internationally? What kind of art is chosen by curators to “represent” the country in the international platforms such as biennials? Joselina Cruz, curator of the Philippine Pavillion for the 2017 Venice Biennale and Joyce Toh curator of the 2016 Singapore Biennale give us an insight into their own processes and selections.
We had a 4 hour lunch in Black Olive @blackoliveph with 2 of my best friends in high school – Tinette Lanuza Dela Vega and Eds Genuino @manayesg. I went early to decorate to surprise the 2 birthday girls. And the reason I’m mentioning this is because we were pleasantly surprised when a friend of Eds @manayesg who was in another table paid for our bill! We think it’s because of the decor 🙂 that they knew we were celebrating Eds’ bday or maybe not and they just truly wanted to treat Eds. What a nice gesture. But starting now I will always decorate so maybe someone from another table will pay for our bill again haha!! A nice lunch with sangria and lots of bar chow at Black Olive ?I like going to bars for lunch and eating the food in peace since I’m not really a drinker. So I can officially say I like going to bars ! 🙂 Congrats Tye Corcuera @tyetanium1 who also part owns Wolfgang Steakhouse.
