Ned’s Birthday Celebration

By | Celebrations, Foodie | One Comment

Happy Birthday to our good friend, Ned! Around 13 years ago, Cris and Nanette introduced Ned to James as the BEST PERSONAL TRAINER!  James took their advice and became so fit and lost around 40 pounds!  Then a few years later, I told James I wanted to workout also and lose weight, so I took over James’ slot in the gym and I lost 20 pounds!  Not to mention my Mom who also joined me at the same time and works out with Ned also at 4am in the morning!

So, thanks to Ned for everything and most especially for being our friend through the years.  I always ask Ned what he needs,  what he wants from abroad or what he wants for christmas or for his birthday…..and he always tells me that he already has EVERYTHING and is very blessed…… and he is!!……. with a lovely family of 4 kids and a good wife, Janet….and indeed that’s all he needs! 🙂

We were very happy this year that we were able to celebrate his birthday at his home and have a home cooked meal by Janet!

I truly admire Janet for always making everything from scratch whether it is costumes and props for her kids or food cooked straight from her kitchen.  I liked the pizza!

And I was able to take a few, afterwhich Ned got mad at me and took away the album!

And Ned during his younger years, so handsome 🙂  Ned was an actor in many action films

Thank you to Christine for helping JP organize, gather friends and being accomplice to the surprise 🙂

We had an incredible dinner that evening!!!!  I have been hearing about Farah Tolentino but have not ever tried her cooking yet till this evening.  And wow!!  LOVED IT!!  We were lucky JP invited us since I don’t know if we will have many opportunities to have her food as she is very expensive and very very busy! She normally only caters for small groups of 10 to 12, but she especially did this group of about 40 for JP and Tess.  Everything she made Heart2Heart enjoyed!!

surprise-birthday-for-tess-011.jpg

Farah has a catering partner, Chef Chris Bautista.  They work together- he is her pastry chef but he also does a lot of other prep work.  That is him beside her in the photo.  He is a graduate of the Paris Ritz Escoffier school where he specialized in pastry

Ganso Shabuway

By | Foodie | 3 Comments

Thank you Mike and Reena for inviting us to try your new restaurant!  Ganso Shabuway is one of their favorite restaurants in San Francisco and because they like it so much, they brought it back home to share it with all of us here in the Philippines!  They will be on soft opening starting tomorrow so come on over and try Ganso Shabuway!!

ganso-shabuway-020.jpg

ganso-welcome.jpg

noflashgansoshabuway_logo.jpg

Eiichi Mochizuki, owner of Ganso Shabuway in the Bay Area.  He told me he has 3 branches – San Mateo, Mountain View and San Jose.  Soon he will be opening in San Francisco.  Philippines will be his first International branch!

ganso-shabuway-07.jpgganso-history.jpg

Reena’s daughter, Camille, is the manager of the restaurant. I thought Camille was Japanese 🙂  It’s nice that the business is all in the family.  Good luck and more power to you Mike, Reena and Camille!  Looking forward to your other store openings – next one in Alabang Town Center!

ganso-shabuway-08.jpgganso-shabuway-02.jpgganso-shabuway-03.jpgganso-shabuway-05.jpg

We came for the tasting so this was the menu for us

ganso-shabuway-04.jpgganso-shabuway-01.jpg

Reena suggested we get half traditional seaweed broth and half spicy broth- GOOD IDEA!  I am a traditional person when it comes to beef, I don’t like to put too much taste from other things – just want to taste the beef.  James liked the spicy!  Thank goodness for the half and half 🙂

ganso-shabuway-010.jpgganso-shabuway-09.jpgganso-shabuway-011.jpgganso-shabuway-013.jpg

2 sauces – Ponzu and Sesame Sauce

ganso-shabuway-014.jpggansosauces.jpg

The staff said to put the green onion and carrots on the ponzu sauce and then the garlic on the sesame sauce ganso-shabuway-015.jpg

I liked the sesame and James liked the ponzu…we are opposites 🙂

ganso-shabuway-017.jpg

YUM YUM BROTH!!

ganso-shabuway-016.jpgganso-shabuway-012.jpg

They have a slicer just to slice the beef

ganso-shabuway-06.jpg

We got the LARGE plate which is 8 oz.

ganso-shabuway-018.jpg

Eiichi explained to me that the beef is Natural Angus and is different from Certified Angus. Natural Angus is corn fed while Certified is grass fed.  Their beef is from Nebraska and is free from hormones and antibiotics.

ganso-shabuway-019.jpg

They also have KOBE BEEF!!!gansokobebeef.jpg

Bringing Tonkatsuya to Dad

By | Father's Day, Foodie | 9 Comments

Since we would not fit in Tonkatsuya,

Previous entry:  Tonkatsuya June 18, 2011

I suggested to my brothers and sisters that we just bring Chef Hosoya to the family.  Thank you again to Mykie to organizing everything for us and making this come to life.  So he came over to Dad and Mom’s house to cook for Father’s Day

img_0831.jpg

We provided the japanese rice, the pork and all the dining ware.  They brought everything else

img_0816.JPG

And just to give you an idea of price, we were 16 people.  They charged P 10,000.00 for everything they provided

Salmon Carpaccio Salad – 3 plates of this

img_0814.JPG

Tonkatsu – we provided the pork but everything else they provided and of course Chef cooked it – we each had one of this so 16 plates of Tonkatsu

img_0823.JPG

Ebi Katsu Curry ( Prawn ) – for Dad since he does not really eat pork

img_0824.JPG

and there was around 16 pcs. of prawns for whoever wanted

img_0828.JPG

Tori Karaage – really really good!! Also good for all of us

img_0835.JPG

It was all worth it!! Thank you Chef Hosoya and Bella for preparing our special dinner for our Dad

If you would also like to have them cook for you in your home, Pls call Bella the wife at +63-915-921-6754

Tonkatsuya

I was so happy when Mykie contacted me to share with us his latest discovery!!!  TONKATSU resto in Manila!! We love tonkatsu!!

A place in San Antonio Village in the basement of a building!!

tonkatsuya-020.jpeg

James and I gladly joined Mykie and Keiko on this adventure!  That’s Mykie, Keiko and James going down the basement

tonkatsuya-01.jpeg

Not at all fancy….in fact a basement with vacant spaces even

tonkatsuya-02.jpeg

And here it is, literally a hole in the wall 🙂

tonkatsuya-03.jpeg

This is it!  3 tables for dining

tonkatsuya-04.jpeg

one side

tonkatsuya-05.jpeg

and the other side 🙂

tonkatsuya-07.jpeg

Thanks Mykie and Keiko!  Keiko is Japanese 🙂

tonkatsuya-06.jpeg

I was so intrigued to see bottled softdrinks because I hardly see them around anymore

tonkatsuya-08.jpeg

Here is Bella with her Japanese husband, Chef Hosoya.  Mr. Hosoya was a Tonkatsu Chef for 30 years in Japan!

tonkatsuya-09.jpeg

The menu.   No frills place, means no frills prices 🙂

img_0470.JPGimg_0470_2.JPG

Oroshi Katsu- Oroshi is just the name of the sauce.  You get all this for P 215.00.  P 180 if plain Tonkatsu

tonkatsuya-010.jpeg

Here is the sauce which is like a raddish type of sauce

tonkatsuya-011.jpeg

This is the plain tonkatsu.  They just use local pork to keep the prices down.  But it was still very good

tonkatsuya-012.jpeg

And this is the Misu Katsu set- a sweet sauce

tonkatsuya-013.jpegtonkatsuya-014.jpeg

I wanted to try Cheese Katsu, I thought it would be inside, but they just topped it, so it was not what i expected

tonkatsuya-015.jpeg

I told Mykie I wanted to try using our Vande Rose Pork loin and we did bring our slab!  Aside form the cooking technique, of course the ingredient is key as well.  So the higher quality the pork is, of course the better the taste

 p1190529.JPG

He cooked it for us and wow, it was so much better.  Duroc pork from the States.  Though the chef recommends that it should have a bit more fat at the end to make it taste better.   We were very satisfied though with what little fat it had

tonkatsuya-016.jpeg

Here it is again, he sliced it thicker than the local portion he makes….

tonkatsuya-017.jpeg

I don’t recommend delivery since this dish is fried, so it might not be good anymore

tonkatsuya-019.jpeg
